Introduction to The Decoding of the Hexagram: The Six Lines 
 
 
The foundation of Human Design Analysis is the hexagram and its structure.  The 
Lines of the hexagram have always been taught from the surface.  The line is the 
surface.  Anybody who gets an education in Human Design receives information 
about the nature of the lines and certain values that have developed over time.  In 
the Spring of 2008, Ra introduced us to Lines in a way that has never been taught 
before.   
 
In this series of six lectures, Ra takes us on an adventure of looking at the lines from 
their number continuity and their relationship to the themes that lie below the line—
the Base, Tone and Color.  Deep underneath is the cognition that dictates how lines 
will be played out, and it will be different from anybody else‟s line.  In addition, you 
will learn that each of the values that Ra describes have a specific quality in 
relationship to the Personality and a different nuance when you look at them in 
terms of the Design.

The First Line: Investigator 
 
 
Hello and welcome to all of you.  It has been a very long time for me returning to the 
lines themselves to look at them.  I've actually had a wonderful preparation for that.  
The last several years in working at the deepest levels in the construct, that is, 
looking beneath the surface of the line, dealing with the nature and the mechanics of 
Color and Tone and Base,  spending years working with that material and teaching 
that material, that I felt that it was an opportunity for me to teach the lines in a way 
that I never did before; that is, I always worked from the surface, understanding 
that the nature of the lines was going to be something that was part of the 
development of the knowledge in order to be able give people the skills necessary to 
be able to interpret the information in the activations in the Rave chart.

Human Design is the Science of Differentiation 
But in doing so, I presented the lines for what they were, that is, that they are 
generics, that they are archetypes, that they are not something to be seen as, in and 
of themselves, unique at all.  As a matter of fact, it is simply a way of being able to 
understand a certain kind of frequency.  The fact is that if you look at the Rave 
Mandala, the first thing to understand about this wheel that you see in the 
illustration is that to see that this wheel is divided up first and foremost into 69,120 
divisions.  That‟s that quite a number—69,120 Bases; there are 69,120 Bases in the 
wheel.   
 
One of the things about Human Design is that Human Design is the science of 
differentiation.  It is about understanding that when you follow the track through 
everybody's activation from their Cross of Life to the lunar activations and the 
planetary activations and you begin to measure them downwards into the layers and 
layers and layers that are here, you begin to see that in fact everything about this 
knowledge is pointed at a way for us to be able to follow a track that leads to 
uniqueness.   
 
Lines are Very General  
One of the things to grasp about the nature of the lines, the 384 lines, is quite a 
distillation down from the 69,120 Bases.  It's very important to see that what the 
line is is something that's very general.  Remember that most human beings live 
their lives on the surface.  Most human beings live in the not-self world.  Most 
human beings live with the not-self mind.  They simply do.  And of course, in doing 
so they never penetrate below that surface because they never gain access to what 
is there.  Everything is about frequency.   
 
At the simplest level, Strategy and Authority is a way of tuning one‟s frequency, the 
holistic frequency of the being.  It‟s only then that we begin to get the necessary 
information that lies below the level of the general or the generic of that line on the 
surface.  So, in my teaching of the lines in this special little course, I'm not going to 
teach you from the line above.  I‟m going to teach you where the line comes from, in 
the sense of what it carries in its continuity; what is there that is underneath that, 
gives the value to the line and what does that value bring, in the practical sense, in 
terms of the way in which you can look at that line in somebody's Design.   
 
Continuity: The Number Code 
First of all, there's a word.  It is word that is used constantly in analysis.  It is a word 
that is used in our teaching in Human Design and that word is „continuity.‟  
Everything about learning Human Design is learning of code.  It's a number code.  
People often identify Human Design people as number people, because there is a 
number code in this.  Fundamentally that number code, at least as far as it concerns

us in the nature of the line, is the number code that operates from Tone to Color to 
Line, because the Tone, the Color and the Line—and I don't mean to be dark and 
mysterious with this, however, you can take that any way you want—that with the 
six Tones, the six Colors, and the six Lines, there is obviously a numerical symmetry 
that is there in the constructs themselves. 
 
Now, there are nuances to it.  There are truly nuances to it, and nuances that are 
realized graphically in the way in which we study these elements, the way in which 
we come to understand them.  Yet, they do have this continuity thematically that 
everything about them is about an evolutionary process.  And it is about an 
evolutionary process that works from the 1 at the bottom to the 6 at the top or the 1 
at the side into the 6 at the other side, or however it is going to be.  But the reality 
is that it is this movement, and the movement is not so much about every step, is an 
improvement over the previous one.  That is, it is simply the way in which the 
frequencies naturally divide.   
 
The Profile: A Role 
So, when we begin our journey and we‟re going to begin our journey where all these 
numerical journeys begin, it begins with the number 1, we have to first grasp what 
this 1 is all about.  And before that, to be clear about what you're looking for here in 
terms of what this means for you.  We all come into this incarnative play with a 
Profile and Profile is a kind of character.  The Profile itself is derived from the six 
different lines of the 10th gate.  In other words, the Profile is about a certain kind of 
character, a certain kind of role that is played, a certain kind of role that ultimately 
one can fulfill.  And that role operates in two ways.  That role operates at a conscious 
level so that you are aware of it, that is, you think you think it is you, and it operates 
at an unconscious level, a Design level.  
 
Basically what that means is that each of the 
values that we are going to look at , the lines 
themselves, have a specific quality when you 
look at them in relationship to the Personality 
and a different nuance when you look at them 
in terms of the Design.  But what we're dealing 
with is the continuity of the process.  It's a 
process. 
 
And 
the 
thing 
to 
recognize 
immediately about the nature of the 1, and 
again this is something that is a key, that this 
is the foundation.  It's the foundation.  It's the 
beginning.  It's the basis.  And when you think 
about it, you have to extrapolate that.  But 
instead of moving outward from it, let‟s see 
where it all comes from.

The Tonal Level: Cognitive Architecture  
Let‟s go down and let‟s go down to what is the tonal level.  When you‟re Tone, you‟re 
dealing with a triangular graphic in which the 1st and 2nd Tones are in this corner 
over here, and the 3rd and 4th Tones are in this corner over here, and the 5th and 6th 
Tones are over here.  And yet, it is the same 
process where there is a dividing to one side or 
the other.  And in looking at that very 1st Tone, 
that very 1st Tone in this tonal construct, when 
we study Tone, what we study is cognitive 
architecture.  In other words, long before you 
get to the line and its expression on the 
surface, deep underneath is a cognitive plan.  
Each and every one of us has a unique map in 
terms of the way in which our intended 
cognition gets to the surface. 
 
I want you to think about Tone as an 
architect's plans and compare it to the house 
that gets built.  Because we all have this 
extraordinary tonal architecture, but by the time we build the house something is 
really wrong, because somehow along the way we let go of the plan, that we were 
not following the tonal architecture, and what that leads to is what most human 
beings experience which is the not-self life and the control of the not-self mind on 
the decision making process.   
 
The 1st Tone: Survival  
When we come back to this tonal architecture, when you're dealing with the very 1st 
Tone, you're dealing with the very, very, root of what it is to be a bio-form.  It‟s 
called survival.  It is about survival.  It is not only about survival, but it is about 
defense survival, defensive survival.  What‟s interesting about defensive survival is 
that it is deeply, deeply rooted at the tonal level in smell.  And one of the things that 
we are defensive about are threats.  So at the very, very, very depth of our 
architecture what we have down in that 1, because that's the way the architecture is 
being built, the cognitive architecture, it starts with we have to stay alive.  And we 
have to be very aware of threats, whatever they may be.  And again, threats are 
relative.  But this is what‟s deep underneath.   
 
Intelligence Driven by Fear  
What does tonal architecture represent?  It represents the potential for intelligence.  
One of the most profound things about the 1s is their potential intelligence.  It is 
designed for that.  But it is designed for that at the deepest level, driven by fear.

And you can see at the deepest level cognitively that the intelligence is being focused 
and honed on what threatens its potential.   
 
The 1st Color: Motivation and Determination 
Now let's move that up a layer.  We move it up to a layer and we get to Color and 
we get to the 1st Color.  When we get to the 1st Color, Color is different on the Design 
side from what it is on the Personality side.  On the Personality side Color is about 
motivation and on the Design side Color is about determination.  They are two very 
different things—motivation in the way in which the mind is driven to conceptualize 
and determination is the way in which the body can differentiate in terms of the way 
in which the physical vehicle is nurtured.  Those are two different values here. 
 
Color 1 Motivation: Fear 
It is something to see very clearly that when we are dealing with this Color what we 
are dealing with is a motivation that is rooted in fear.  And you can see the 
continuity in this movement from the tonal architecture that says if we cannot 
defend ourselves, we will not survive; to the Color which is there to communicate the 
cognition.  Remember that the Tone, if you're looking at a line, there's your line that 
you've got the Color layer underneath and then you have the tonal layer and the 
Tone has no direct connection to the line above.  It is through the agency of Color 
that it is communicated.   
 
It is one of the real wonders and not something I'm here to teach you, but it's one of 
the real wonders of understanding the way in which Color acts as an instrument to 
be able to provide both Design and Personality information that is brought together 
by the Monopole to create the holistic life.  It's an extraordinary thing.  But the thing 
to recognize is that it is the Color that is, let's say, the communicator in this 
particular organization or the way things work. 
 
The Crystals of Consciousness and the Neutrino Stream  
Let me refresh you another way.  If you think about the crystals of consciousness 
and the neutrino stream that is moving through the crystals of consciousness and 
what is being filtered by the crystals of consciousness in terms of what we have as 
unique consciousness potential that this filtering process, when the neutrino stream 
hits the crystal, this is Base.  When the neutrino is within the crystal, this is Tone, 
the inner architecture.  And when the neutrino stream leaves the crystal there is an 
exit frequency that is called Color.  Is this exit frequency that is captured by the 
Magnetic Monopole and it is in that way that the information is brought together into 
the holistic package.  So Color becomes a very important instrument.

To understand the foundation of this communication, that the foundation of this 
communication on the Personality side is an acute motivation to be alert, motivated 
to be on guard, not necessarily 
knowing why.  In and of itself 
that can be uncomfortable.  And 
because of the fact that Color 
transfers in the not-self and 
because the transference leads 
to 
lack 
of 
cognition, 
most 
human beings who have a 4th 
Color 
Personality 
are 
in 
dysfunctional fear all the time.  
In 
other 
words, 
they 
can 
become 
very, 
very, 
very 
psychologically unhealthy.  It 
can be something that truly 
destabilizes them. 
 
The Design 1st Color: One Thing at a Time  
Let's look at the other side of it, though, the Design side of what this primary Color 
aspect brings.  On the Design side it brings something else.  It brings the need for an 
understanding of one thing at a time being the bedrock to its particular nutrition.  
Now, that one thing at a time is very interesting, because it says a great deal about 
dysfunction that ultimately we can see in the 1st line being, and the dysfunction is 
that the 1st line being is not here to multitask.  If you‟re a 1/3, if you‟re a 1/4, if 
you‟re a 5/1, if you‟re a 4/1, you‟re not here to multitask.  It is something really to 
grasp. 
 
Everything about the 1 is about this one thing at a time, because what the 1 can't 
deal with is something that is not stable, something that is not recognizable.  If you 
go back to the tonal level, it‟s the immune system saying I need to recognize 
everything that I need to recognize to defend myself.  And whether that recognition 
is operating at a cellular level or whether that is operating at an externalized level to 
the holistic being, it is the same principle—that principle of we need to be alert, we 
need to be afraid.  Afraid is good for us because it teaches us what to be alert for.  It 
is all a part of the same thing.  It is the root of our intelligence. 
We’re Here to be Cognitive  
Remember, if we go back to what Tone is—and for many of you this is not a part of 
your studies, so you‟re getting a generalized introduction to this—what Tone 
represents is the foundation of why we're here.  We‟re here to be cognitive.  We are 
here to be aware.  And that awareness is built into the cognitive architecture.  Now, 
the work of Human Design through mechanics is to be able to guide somebody to be

able to gain access to what is their differentiate potential.  What is their 
differentiated potential at the tonal level, at the Color level, whatever that may be. 
 
But again, please understand the vast majority of humanity—I'm giving you a 
theoretical presentation here—the vast majority of humanity is simply not-self, 
period.  And all of this becomes very distorted because as you are going to see, by 
the time we get to the line level, that the line acts as a kind of loose cannon.  As 
long as it‟s not supported by what is correct, then the line itself is a very, very broad 
generalization that carries many, many traps in it.  The traps that are the traps that 
keep the not-self beings and their fear-laden minds locked into their mental decision 
making patterns.  It doesn't give them an opportunity, truly, to be liberated. 
 
So, when we‟re looking at the Design side, the Design 1st Color gives us another clue 
about what we're moving towards to the surface.  Remember, the surface is built on 
what's underneath.  The line is a construct built out of the potential of what's 
underneath.  So in that continuity lies many messages.  And it isn't just that the 1st 
line is only related in continuity to those 1st lines; after all, each and every one of us 
will have a different chain.   
 
In the advanced imaging work that we do in Rave Psychology and PHS, we work with 
chains, that is, Tone-Color-Line is called the chain.  And everybody has different 
chain configurations.  You can be a 6th Tone, 2nd Color, 1st line; there can be all kinds 
of configurations.  So in expressing this continuity this way, don't misunderstand.  
There are all kinds of elements that are there in the line level that in fact add to what 
can be very confusing if you're not correct, because you're designed to hone in on 
what is specifically correct for you. 
 
Out of those 69,120 Bases, one; think about it.  Out of those thousands and 
thousands and thousands and thousands of Tones, one—at least four, the particular 
aspect you‟re looking for.  Then you begin to see what differentiation really looks like 
and you being to understand what we‟re dealing with.  Here is a generalization in 
order to be able to give you an insight into this construct, what this line is really 
made of. 
 
The Lines are the Script in the Movie of Life  
Most people think the line is what's written in the Rave I‟Ching.  I'm somebody that 
forever refers to life as a movie and exhorts people to enjoy the entertainment.  The 
lines are a script; haven‟t you noticed?  They‟re a script.  They are so terribly 
accurate.  It is a script that is laid out.  And it is a script that is laid out for the 
general roles or aspects of roles that every line represents in the general 
construction of the character as a whole.  It's a play, as the Bard loved to say, but 
it‟s true, this is what it is.  Our task is not to be suckered into the play.  Our task is 
to be an audience, be the passenger, and be able to see it for what it is.   
 
The lines are not what the line is about.  All that description that is there is simply 
giving you the script of the generic application, but how different it will be

underneath.  Don‟t think that all these lines are the same.  Don‟t think that just 
because you've got the 13.1 and your friend has the 13.1, that you've got the line—
you don‟t.  It looks like it, but only on the surface, because under the underneath it's 
different the way you're motivated, the way they‟re motivated.  The cognitive root, 
the sense, in that sense, that attunes you correctly to the way in which you can 
bring the realization of that particular character to the surface.   
 
It's like the role of Hamlet.  I've seen many people play Hamlet, maybe seven or 
eight different actors in my lifetime.  The script is the same.  The lines don‟t change, 
unless you‟ve got some weirdo trying to mess around with Shakespeare, the lines 
don‟t change.  But the actors playing those lines are very different.  The line is really 
about getting into the script.  Have you ever noticed that if you watch the transits 
long enough you begin to see that this is a rolling script out there?  It's a story.  It's 
a pattern.  It‟s what we are of and what we are moving through.   
 
And when you're looking at your lines, begin to see that you're a novice at this point, 
a true beginner.  You‟ve been given a part to play.  This is your incarnation and you 
don't know how to play it.  You end up getting pulled along through the general 
frame of what that role is about.  But you never bring your magic to it.  The magic 
that you bring to a role is like the great actor or actress that brings some magic to a 
role that people cannot forget; that they bring something different.   
 
The Cognition Underneath Dictates How Lines will be Played  
I want you to see lines for what they are.  This is not you.  You are not a prisoner of 
the line, because deep underneath, it is the cognition that is going to dictate how 
this line will be played.  And it will be different from anybody else‟s play, like 
musicians playing the same piece of music, note-fornote for note-for-note, and how 
different they are.  This is what a line is.   
 
The dilemma for us, the not-self world, is that this line, rather than being this unique 
special quality, is not: It's just becomes a generic.  It becomes the investigator.  
Well, gee, let‟s take seven billion people and break them down.  Divide it by six, 
approximately 1.2 billion, somewhere around that, 1.2 billion investigators, 
something like that.  Do you know what I mean?  This is a generic.  It's the surface.   
 
I didn't introduce Design with Base, Tone and Color.  As a matter of fact, the first 
time I mentioned it, I‟ll never forget that.  I was, I think, in Zurich, and I was laying 
out some below-the-line surface stuff in a book of mine.  My associate who was 
coordinating the event at the time asked me what I was doing.  And I said to him, 
and I said this to no one else, I said “there is all this stuff that is there below the line 
and at some point I‟m going to have to teach it.”  And he said “what?”  I‟ll never 
forget that “what.”  “You mean there‟s more?”

The Line is the Surface  
The line is the surface.  It‟s gloss, in a way, because human beings are on the 
surface, they are.  The not-self world with its billions and billions and billions and 
billions and billions of human beings, this is not-self world, with all of them running 
around trying to rule their lives with a mind, none of them in touch with their Inner 
Authority, with none of them conscious of being a nine-centered being, of being a 
binary consciousness, caught up in the program, driven like lemmings towards an 
endless somewhere-down-the-road cliff.   
 
This is the world.  This is the world that the line lives in.  You can meet any fool on 
the road that is a 1/3 and you can say you've got an investigative Personality and 
they'll nod their head.  Yeah, sure it's true.  But it's like meeting somebody on the 
street in Germany and saying you're Caucasian.  It‟s true, it‟s kind of obvious.  You 
know what I mean.  You have to be very careful about the values that you attach to 
this.   
 
What‟s so fascinating about it is that it's these very, very, very superficial values that 
are the key to cracking someone on the surface.  People are so fascinated when they 
hear their lines.  Oh yeah, that's me.  Well, it's what's happened to you, but it is not 
you.  It is not the way this line is here to be played.  You‟ve never truly played this 
line.  It plays you.  You‟re not-self.  You don't know what to investigate.  You don‟t 
know what to be afraid of or not.  You have no idea.  The only thing you've got is 
your not-self mind telling you better be afraid of this, that and the other thing, 
everything.  You have no idea.   
 
The 1st Line Feels Inferior  
Based on your openness, based on the openness in your design, the hanging gates, 
the bridges for the splits, you don‟t know what to look at, you don‟t know where to 
look, and you don‟t know where to start.  And 
the most common thing of the 1st line being is 
to feel inferior.  The home of the inferiority 
complex; 
inferior 
because 
they 
try 
to 
multitask, inferior because they are simply not 
correct, inferior because they absolutely have 
no idea what the fear is for.  They don't.  And 
they‟re all alone.   
 
When you look to the Design and you look to 
the Color, you see the continuity going back to 
cave people—insular, closed off, always trying 
to protect themselves.  This is where the whole 
foundation of life on this planet is rooted in 
fear.  The fear that the humans will finally go

over the top and eliminate everybody, the fear of this, the fear of that, the fear this 
plague, this thing, that thing, fear, fear, fear, fear, fear, with nothing to hold on to, 
nothing stable.  
 
We don't have true investigators on this plane.  We have generic, fearful people.  
And most of the fear is masked by knowledge, as if somehow the knowledge is going 
to liberate them.  In the not-self it does not work.  You‟re not-self, you‟re full of fear, 
and you‟re an investigator.  You think something's wrong with you.  You go Googling 
for symptoms, and you end up with some exotic diseases you are convinced that you 
have, that you're afraid that you‟ve got it—the investigator going mad.   
 
The Investigator Looks for a Solid Foundation  
The 1 is about—I guess the deepest goal the cognition has, and the goal is „if we can 
be secure, everything is possible.‟  And oh, is that a deep truth; if we can be secure.  
I teach self-love.  I teach human beings that through this process, through the 
experiment you find, what you discover is that you can trust in your ability to 
navigate on this plane, that you can find within yourself a love that is very special.  
It is not something that human beings have.  They dislike themselves.  They're 
constantly hoping that somebody else is going to prove to them that they are really 
worthy.  Nearly 70% of the planet has an undefined Heart Center.  It‟s such a mess 
out there.   
 
The investigator says, if you don't have a solid foundation, I don't care where you're 
going, but everything is going to fall down.  The very nature of the hexagram, the 
very construct itself, cannot survive without a solid foundation, it cannot.  So we are 
driven to find the foundations.  We are driven.  It is the very, very source of our 
drive to know, to understand, to make sense of, and to grasp.  Everything, 
everything—the more you know, the less you fear; the more you know, the less you 
fear.  You can see the way these beings can be driven.   
 
Correct Cognition Begins on the Design Side  
Yet, at the same time, if they're operating correctly, I mean really, if they're 
operating correctly—Strategy and Authority—that automatically what's happening to 
them is that they're gaining access to what is their correct cognition.  And that 
correct cognition begins on the Design side.  It begins in the way in which the vehicle 
moves through space.  The navigation—if you're not navigating correctly as a 1 
you're never going to be able to get to the root of the thing you must get to the root 
of before you can move on.  You can‟t leave a fear behind.  You can‟t.

The 1st Line Personality 
This is one of the things that is so devastating to 1s, something that's just not been 
resolved, something that's hanging there, something that's not complete, something 
that hasn't been really dug into because it lingers inside of them and it breeds the 
fears that the not-self lives on.  This one thing at a time, for a 1st line being, is so 
important.  It is one of those aspects in their nature, rooted in the continuity that 
flows upwards that can add such richness to delivering this information on the 
surface.  Somebody who is a 1/3, what that is to be a 1/3, this is the foundation 
profile.  Not the foundation line, but the foundation profile; a 1st line Personality, a 
3rd line Design.  And the 3rd line is deeply mutative.   
 
It says something so extraordinary about life.  It‟s so wonderful in the way we can 
see it in the mechanics, this 1/3, the foundation constantly mutating.  It is us.  We 
are mutation.  Atomics are mutative.  We are the mutation.  The investigator is 
alone.  When you're dealing with a 1/3 or a 1/4 as profiles you‟re dealing with the 
most insular personalities that we have.  It doesn't mean that's what they display.  
That‟s a matter of their Design.  They may be designed to be tribal, social, whatever 
the case may be, but this is an insular Personality locked deep inside in its own 
aloneness.  And without a solid foundation, it suffers.  And that solid foundation is 
only trusting in itself, because if it cannot trust in itself, it is driven endlessly to try to 
find solutions that are not to be found. 
 
For the 1st line Personality, nothing is more important than being able to see that 
they can navigate on this plane and it's all going to be okay.  It‟s why the not-self 
1/3s and 1/4s have so much confusion in their lives and they don't know where to 
look.  You need to be able to put certain things aside as a 1 and move on.  You‟re 
not here to spend your whole process trying to resolve a basic fear.  And yet, without 
the cognitive, how difficult it is, if not simply impossible.   
 
The Need to be in the Right Place  
And it's not just about finding that solid foundation.  It is about recognizing 
something.  There is something deeply, deeply empathic in the nature of what it is to 
be a 1.  It's just there, this taking in, this ability to take in the other, the ability to 
take in information, and to take it in only because it presents itself.  The thing to 
understand about the nature of the 1st line being, because they are the deepest in 
the right angle, the 1/3s, the 1/4s, that the great aspects of their life are rooted in 
the things out there banging into them.  But in order for the right thing to transform 
you, in order for the right thing to get you going on a particular foundation, you have 
to be in the right place.  And you can only be in the right place when you‟re 
navigating correctly.   
 
You have an uncomfortable Personality, that when it doesn't really grasp things can 
be ill at ease, can be fearful.  It‟s why it's so important to be able to begin the 
process of experimenting with what is correct so that you can begin to get what are 
the true qualities inherent in your abilities to be able to differentiate a line, not to be

one of those 6, but to go back to the 69,120, that one Base that leads to that one 
Tone to that one Color that leads to your line.  That chain that gives you your 
differentiation that you cannot imagine, but you can live.  And you can live it when 
you are operating in the experiment and allowing it to take place.   
 
The 1st Line Design 
It is different when it's the body, the 4/1s, the 5/1s, these 1 bodies, these are bodies 
that are fearful.  These are bodies that like solid ground.  They‟re different.  They are 
bodies that are always looking for a secure position, a defensible position.  It‟s 
interesting to think about the nature of investigation and to realize that investigation 
is something that you are designed to do alone.  We have investigation factories on 
the planet, huge investigation factories, think tanks and research labs and all of 
these kinds of things that have brought us the so-called wonders that we have; the 
homogenized process. 
 
The investigator is a personal thing, it‟s an individual thing.  It‟s not intended to be a 
group endeavor.  It isn't.  You can see that when you go into the body and you can 
see very clearly that 4/1s and 5/1s, that their investigation is something that needs 
to take place behind closed doors.  They‟re different.  They‟re not the kind of beings 
that go out in the world.  Their investigation is much more internal process, an inner 
process of investigation.  And at the same time, they are very uncomfortable if their 
environment isn't secure. 
 
When you begin to understand that the line is a generic, that there are all these 
differentiated possibilities that flow up from underneath, you can begin to look at 
these linings in a different way.  You can begin to look at them from the point of 
view of a director, rather than the actor, to stay with my metaphor.  The director in 
the sense of: Well, how is my line to be played?  What is it that is going to make my 
line played differently?  This is the knowledge that is there in those that have been 
trained to be PHS Practitioners and Rave Psychologists, to be able to guide 
individuals into this process deeper and deeper so that they, through the recognition 
of the mechanics, can begin to watch the process.  It's not like you have to do 
anything in the classic sense.   
 
Oh yes, there is a great deal involved in transformation.  Transformation in and of 
itself is a radical process and it's a radical process that demands that you move 
deeper and deeper and deeper into what is a deeply personally oriented process.  
Here in this particular configuration, when you're dealing with an investigator, that 
one of the things that is clear is that the investigator is going to benefit from 
protection and security in their environment.  I know this as a 5/1 and 5/1s are 
notoriously careful and paranoid.  This is one of their aspects. 
 
What you have underneath is that you have ingrained in that the potential of the fear 
and the insecurity that is there in the 1st line body and in the need for secure and 
protected environment.  And at the same time you have the 5th line Personality 
looking at the world and saying, “what do they want?”  And you can see right away

what happens that the moment this stays just the generic—so many 5/1s, I know a 
lot of 5/1s, it‟s quite something to see how messed up they can actually be, how any 
of these configurations are the moment that you're dealing with human beings that 
are just simply not-self. 
 
Radically Embrace Your Process  
This program is open to every level student and with the people that are here, there 
is a whole cross-section of experience in Human Design from newcomers to long-
time professionals.  The story in the end is always the same in Human Design.  It 
really is.  That is, you have to radically embrace your process, what it is to follow 
your Strategy and Authority and to finally make the move that is going to open up 
the possibility for you to enjoy this drama, because if you're not watching the movie 
you can't enjoy it, or you certainly cannot be entertained by it, and you can't get to 
that place unless you release your mind from its mundane and distorted role as 
being the dictator of your life.   
 
We are a Binary Consciousness 
We are a binary consciousness.  At any level that you want to understand what it is 
to be you, what it is to be a nine-centered being, it begins with the simple.  It begins 
with understanding we are a binary consciousness.  We have a Design consciousness 
that runs as this vehicle.  The vehicle is the life.  It is the vehicle that provides us 
with the platform for everything we're going to experience in this life.  It gives us our 
brain, our mobility and all the things that go with it, all the sensory equipment, all 
the tools, everything; it is the life.  It is what we ride in as Personality.  As 
Personality we are a passenger.  We come in after the life has been established.  We 
come in after the life architecture has been built.  We are left behind when the 
vehicle dies.   
 
We are the passenger.  And as long as we are living in a distorted state in which we 
are giving the mind authority to run our lives, we are never going to get to embrace 
the beauty of what it is in our own unique potential to filter the consciousness field, 
what it means to live through your outer authority, the investigator whose outer 
authority is rooted in their correctness, in their correct motivation, in a correct 
perspective, being in the right place, nurturing themselves correctly, operating 
correctly.  Then the nuance of the value of what this particular investigator is is 
going to come to the surface, the way in which their role is finally going to be played 
out.

Playing Your Unique Part in the Play 
Profile is this: you‟ve got the job.  That is what profile does.  It says, look, you‟ve got 
the job, you've won the part, you've got the part in the play, and here it is.  Okay, so 
you‟re going to incarnate and here‟s the costume we‟re going to give you.  This is 
your profile, this is your cross, here‟s your costume.  And here's your particular 
construct, your Design and everything that goes with it.  And here are the lines that 
you have to learn in the play.  Now the rest, because everything else is written, the 
rest is up to you.  How are you going to play that part?  How are you going to play 
those lines?  Don't be fooled; they‟re not solid, these things, these lines.   
 
I used to tell students when I was going through this process earlier in my career 
teaching these things that everybody should learn how to write their own I‟Ching, 
because you can.  Because once you understand the mechanics, once you 
understand the numbers, if you're so skilled in the poetics, or if you just want to 
create your own, you can, because these lines are just lines.  It‟s a way of 
understanding how the play is laid out.  It‟s my poetic attempt to lay out the drama 
of what the program brings, but not the art.   
 
That‟s what I like.  I love a great performance, how beautiful, how stimulating, how 
inspiring, the great performance.  But this is what you‟re here for.  You‟ve been 
given the finest role.  It‟s yours; it‟s unique.  There is nothing like it.  There are 
incredible possibilities in the fulfillment of what it is to play out that role.  For 21 
years I've been telling people you‟re mythology.  You can live it.  You can breathe it.  
You can live the beauty of what it is to be on this plane and to be aware and not to 
be afraid; but, to trust, to love yourself, to watch the world and to share your 
consciousness, to offer your outer authority, and the magic that that can bring, the 
uniqueness of your filtering.   
 
We are Here to Fulfill the Possibility of Uniqueness 
We‟re different creatures, we nine-centered creatures.  We are.  I sort of refer to it 
now as neo-narcissism, which I think is really cute, which I‟m sure is going to annoy 
a lot of people.  There are anti-narcissistic organizations in the world.  They think it 
is bad for people to be concerned about themselves.  There's no other way to go 
here.  It‟s what makes us so different.  We are here to fulfill the possibility of 
uniqueness.  Every time I say that word there is a part of me that says “do they 
really get what that means?,” because uniqueness is so profound.  It is one of the 
most extraordinary words that I know because it is magical, spiritual, and sublime, 
it‟s a divine word.  It‟s us.   
 
We are not here to be homogenized, to be alike.  We're not different enough.  A 
world that would embrace difference, individual difference, my goodness what a 
different planet we would live on.  The world is tamed and orderly.  It is 
homogenized by governments, by religions, by philosophies.  It‟s not what we‟re 
about.  We are here to discover within ourselves everything we ever thought was on 
the outside that we couldn‟t have because it‟s in us.  It‟s in the embrace of the

uniqueness, in the embrace of the differentiation, in the embrace of what it means to 
stand as an individual within yourself and be correct for yourself.   
 
It‟s not about abandoning the world; the world isn‟t going away and the world will 
not leave you behind.  It doesn't like it when anybody steps out.  The world likes 
organized difference, not real difference.  But this is the challenge.  It is an old 
warrior‟s path, it always has been.  And I say warrior only in the sense that it is a 
discipline, a discipline to go all the way, and the discipline that no matter what it 
costs, no matter what it takes.  After all, this is not about believing in results, it‟s 
living them.  You cannot continue in this process until you recognize that the process 
is valid for you.  But once you do, there is only deeper and deeper to go so that you 
can get to that place where you can be not an investigator, but a unique 
differentiated force.  How different that is from just being another generic, just being 
another Hamlet, not the Hamlet.   
 
I‟m a Clarion and I live it.  It is what has happened to me.  And I see what it means 
to be one.  But there are millions and millions and millions and millions and millions 
and millions of Clarions that are alive on this plane now.  And there are millions of 
them that have a script that is very similar to mine, and you can lump them all 
together, and you can describe them in an overview and each of them in hearing 
that would say, gee that‟s me.  It tells you how deeply the homogenized being is.   
 
We‟re here to bring a unique creative spirit to the role and we don't have to do 
anything.  We have to allow it to express itself.  It‟s like trying to teach somebody 
how to sing.  They want to sing so they push it out of their throat.  But it comes from 
deeper inside.  And it's only something that you can allow to come out you. 
 
We‟re here to watch this true transformation, to be a spectator to our own 
transformation.  And because of the mechanics, because of the knowledge, you get a 
map.  You can follow the story.  You can see the way you bring your nuance to the 
script.  How you play the role, what that unique presentation is.  There are so many 
investigators, and they can be subdivided into so many different types.  The 69,120 
different kinds of investigators from the orientation level, yeah, right, and on and on 
and on.   
 
So, when you look at lines, see them for what they are.  They allow you to see the 
surface, but you also have to understand that there's something very, very deep 
beneath them.  What is beneath that generic line is you, you and your differentiated 
potential.  And there is only one way to get there.  You operate correctly and you 
stop making decisions with your mind and you begin to watch so that you can see 
how you play.  It‟s fun, by the way.   
 
Anyway, to all of you, it‟s very nice to start this process.  It‟s interesting for me to be 
able to approach it in this way.  I'm pleased that all of you are participating; it

Lecture Two 
The Second Line: The Hermit 
 
 
Welcome to all of you.  We continue our 
adventure of looking at the lines and looking 
at the lines from its number continuity, its 
relationship to the themes that lie underneath.  
One of the things that arose in conversations 
before this class is something that I need to 
stress.  That is, the teaching of lines has never 
been taught this way, or at least the 
introduction to lines has never been taught 
this way.  The lines have always been taught 
from the surface and in teaching them from 
the surface, there are certain values that we 
have developed in the way in which we teach 
lines, the way in which anybody who gets an 
education in Human Design receives the information of the nature of line.  
 
A Line is a Script Influenced From Beneath  
But we‟re not programmed from the top down.  We‟re programmed from the bottom 
up, and we are programmed through the neutrino stream moving through the 
crystal, which basically is a Base, Tone, Color phenomenon as it moves through.  
This is the underlying information that forms the basis upon which presentation 
takes place.  It is on the surface through the line that we have the script and literally 
it is that, it is a script.  It is a script to be differentiated by the spirit of the actor or 
actress that's going to fulfill that particular role or that particular aspect of a role 
that's inherent in that script.  It‟s what a line is. 
 
And yet, the reality is that everything about the nature of that script which stands on 
and therefore has its own unique and fixed values is about the way in which it is 
going to be interpreted, it‟s going to be interpreted by the way it‟s influenced from 
beneath.  One of the themes that I'm bringing to this kind of analysis of line is to 
understand the underlying thematics that are there in the structure and the structure 
rooted in the six.  What are these relationships that are there?  And yet, it's very 
important to be very cautious about the way in which you use this information.  It is 
a way for me through continuity to add depth to your understanding of the line, but 
it doesn't fix anything.  That is, this isn‟t the way the line is always going to function.

Tone, Color and Line Chains  
What we‟re looking at is a pure chain.  In Primary Health System and Rave 
Psychology studies, one of the many things that we study is the relationships that 
exist between these levels, the substructure to the surface.  And we do 
investigations into what is called „chains.‟  The chain is the relationship that exists 
between the Tone, the Color and the line itself.  And in working with these chains 
there are many, many, many variables.  It took 22 lectures to teach the chain 
variations to each of the classes.  That is 44 lectures altogether.  There are an awful 
lot of chains.  Any combinations of the number six in a grouping of three, and if 
you‟re mathematical you know right away there are a lot of variations. 
 
Tone Lays out the Architecture of the Cognitive Being   
So, it's very important to understand that even though I‟m going to talk about the 
2nd Tone and the 2nd Color, not all 2nd lines operate through a 2nd Tone and a 2nd 
Color.  They may operate through a 4th Tone and a 5th Color or a 1st Tone and a 6th 
Color.  There can be all these different combinations underneath.  So, in taking this 
journey this way, I'm just trying to give you a taste of how the script evolved, 
because the script evolves.  Deep down underneath when we go to the Tone level, 
Tone is something that I guess is probably the most mechanical of all the areas in 
Human Design.  In that it lays out what is in essence the architecture of the holistic 
life.  It lays out the architecture of what it is to be us.  It lays out the architecture of 
what it is to be a cognitive being.   
 
It doesn't necessarily mean that that architecture, by the way, gets purely to the 
surface, but it gives us a sense or a sense of the value inherent in what this 2 is.  
Where you can see it most predominantly is when you first begin to look at it from 
the tonal level.  If we look at it only from the script level, we already know the script 
of the hermit—the natural, the natural talent, the one that's inside, the one that is 
sort of closed off, yet there is always this opening to the call.  I know the classic 
configuration of the expression of the hermit of the surface as a script.  That's the 
script.  But what fills out that particular aspect of that script?   
 
The 2: The Heart and Soul of Intelligence  
If we go down to Tone, we go to the architecture.  Let‟s think about what the 
architecture brings.  First of all, I have a very deep fascination with the 2, because it 
is clear to me that it is the heart and soul of intelligence.  When we get down to the 
Tone level, when you get to the first two Tones, the first two Tones are part of what 
is called a splenic binary.  They‟re very much associated with the immune system,

survival life.  It‟s very much about keeping the bio-form alive, particularly on the 
Design side.   
 
The 1st and 2nd Tones  
When you're looking at the 1, you're looking at the primary fears for survival, the 
deep concerns that have to be there.  But the 2 is so different.  It‟s not afraid.  It‟s 
not afraid in the way that the 1 is afraid.  It‟s not afraid of the world that it‟s a part 
of.  The 1 is always alert to the world even when it understands it.  That immune 
system logic, once you've got it framed, hold onto the framing, don't let go of it, 
keep on being alert.  But the 2 isn‟t interested in that.  It doesn't carry that kind of 
fear, not at all.  And there is something interesting about it.  That is, intelligence is 
breath.  At least it seems that way when you look at the 2nd Tone.  The 2nd Tone on 
the Design side is all about mouth breathing, as opposed to the 1st line which is 
about nose breathing.  These are very different in the way in which they take in 
information.   
 
One of the things that is so interesting about the 2nd Tone mouth breather is that 
they‟re able to pick up information in the atmosphere in a way that is absolutely 
remarkable.  The capacity for them to be able to pick up information through breath, 
literally through the breathing, through mouth breathing, it is literally mouth 
breathing.  What is this intelligence?  It is this readiness, I think it‟s readiness.  In all 
the years that I was doing readings when somebody was sitting beside me when I 
was doing personal readings, the very first thing I would say to them is: Are you 
ready? 
 
Intelligence is About Readiness  
This is what intelligence is all about, is readiness.  And it‟s readiness for not what it 
is.  It‟s readiness for something else, for anything else.  It is that very readiness that 
is able to pick up things long before anyone else.  It is this very readiness that 
ultimately is going to carry with it elements into the gift of what the 2nd line is about, 
because it is a gift.  What ultimately we come to see in the script as the natural.  
Because this readiness, by the time it gets to the surface in a sense becomes a 
talent, a talent that doesn't need or seek explanation or understanding or sensing or 
knowing; not an investigator.   
 
In the Personality side it‟s something else, particularly when you see it through what 
2nd Color is.  This jump from the cognitive archetype down below, this cognitive 
archetype that is ready for what doesn't or isn't yet there or present.  It‟s hard to 
describe how incredible that it is.  It is the root of what we call curiosity.  It is the 
source of genius.  It is this ability to be able to realize that there's something else.

The 2nd Line Body  
There‟s something very interesting about the 2nd line body, not the Personality, not 
the hermit Personality you're all familiar with, but the 2nd line body.  What‟s 
interesting about the 2nd line body is that this is Achilles‟, the Achillean myth where 
Achilles was dipped in the water and held him by his ankle.  And of course, the place 
where he was held by the goddess was the one place that was never touched by the 
liquid and of course this was the one place where he was vulnerable; the Achilles‟ 
heel, so to speak.  But every single 2nd line body—the 5/2s and the 6/2s—has an 
Achilles‟ heel.  They all have this thing that could be a real weakness, could be 
detrimental to them.  And it's not about what's out there.  It's the same kind of 
thing.  It‟s not about being afraid of what already is there.  It isn't about that at all.  
It‟s going to be something else. 
 
All 2nd Lines are Waiting for Something Specific  
For the 2 there‟s always something else.  There‟s always something else, always.  
And it‟s not about that it‟s not satisfied, because you can‟t anthropomorphize it that 
way.  It isn't.  Inherent in the 2 is this refusal to be secure.  It‟s a refusal in a sense 
to really be secure.  When you think about the hermit and you think about the 
hermit closed off in their environment, what you know about them because you see 
them in the not-self all the time is that they're not really closed off at all.  They‟re 
protecting themselves, while at the same time they're waiting for something.  Every 
single 2nd line is waiting for something.   
 
We know when the sense of the Personality that it‟s waiting for the call.  I only have 
two 2nd lines, and one of them clearly for me, the 40th gate 2nd line was where I got 
the call.  This is what the 2nd line is all about.  Not only that, but you‟ve got to 
understand something about this call.  It is so specific.  This is one of the great 
dilemmas for anyone who is carrying a hermit Personality, the 2/4s, the 2/5s, how 
messed up their lives can be, because they don't know what call.  They can‟t 
recognize it.  They are not ready for it because they cannot see it or hear it or 
recognize it.   
 
Oh, there's nothing more incredible than the distortion that exists in the hermit.  And 
why do you think they are called the hermit?  They‟re not called the hermit because 
of the potential of their true self.  They're called the hermit because this is the deep, 
deep, deep result of the not-self, all these hermit, regardless of their type, angry, 
frustrated, disappointed, bitter, stuck away in their little places because they've 
gambled on all those calls and they blew up in their face because it didn't really get 
the call.  They didn't.

The 2/4 Profile 
It‟s the thing about the 2.  The classic example of this is the 2/4.  Oh, there are 
probably a billion and a half 2/4s in the world.  That‟s a lot of human beings.  Every 
major profile like the 2/4 has about 14% of the population.  So, we‟re talking about a 
lot of human beings who are 2/4s.  Now, think about all that natural talent and 
genius, all those natural gifts, all that wonder that's out there.  But there‟s 
something that is very basic about the 2 because it is part—again, going back to the 
tonal architecture—it is part of a primary survival architecture.  And the moment that 
you look at the 2s within the Independent Variable or through the nodal system, you 
begin to really understand that the hermit as a construct is something that is very, 
very much a part of the way in which our civilization has evolved.   
 
In other words, deeply rooted in what in the language of Design is known as the 
„hardscape,‟ these sheltered enclosed relatively safe environments, the way in which 
our world has been built, the 1st and 2nd themes tonally and the 1st and 2nd themes in 
terms of Color, the way in which they operate through the nodal system is defining 
an environment in which the hermit is in a closed-in environment waiting to take 
advantage.  The 2/4 is always waiting for that particular opportunity. 
 
Every 2/4 is caught in the investment program.  Who do you invest in?  Who do you 
give your energy to in order to be able to derive your opportunity?  One of things to 
recognize about the 2/4 is that if they're not correct, they don't get the call.  So they 
end up being committed to a lot of things.  I like to call the 2/4 the missionary.  
That's the example of the hermit when it‟s called.  The moment that it gets its call 
that‟s right for it, oh boy is it up and moving.  Unfortunately that's what it looks like 
the first 3, 4, 5, 15, 25, 30 times that they do that as not-self jumping up because 
they think they have the call, and then running back and closing the door and 
hunkering down and swearing that that‟s it for that.   
 
It ends up with that terrible reputation, the paper tiger reputation.  The 2 that can‟t 
live up to its “this and that.”  Everybody sees the 2.  Everybody sees intelligence.  
Wherever there's a 2 in your Design, if you have one, other people are looking at 
that and they're projecting on it.  They're projecting on it and then they call you.  
And if you're not correct and if you're not aware then you jump on whatever that 
happens to be.  And yes, you‟ll end up a paper tiger because it isn‟t going to work. 
 
Color 2 Motivation: Hope  
Think about the motivation, that is, the motivational thematic of the 2.  It‟s one of 
those incredible things—hope; the Personality side of hope.  Hope is magnificent.  
I'm not talking about dumb hope, blind hope.  I‟m not talking about transferred 
hope.  I‟m not talking about hoping that tomorrow is going to be a better day, 
hoping for this or that.  It‟s not about that at all.  It's actually about not having to 
even know why you're waiting, but that you're waiting for something.  That's hope.  
It‟s really very beautiful.

It‟s about sitting by the river, not that you're waiting for something to come by, but 
that there's no other place to sit and that sooner or later something will come by.  
And it‟s not foolish.  It isn't.  This is not blind.  This is the genius.  This is the genetic 
continuity that goes deep, deep, deep back to that tonal architecture.  Deep back to 
that gift, to that readiness for the unknowable, whatever it may be, and in that 
readiness already what ultimately the Ajna will substantiate is how that turns us into 
the creatures that we are, the gift of being able to look not just to see the world, but 
see beyond it, to see beyond anything, to look beyond anything, to wonder beyond 
anything. 
 
In a sense, it is the 2 that most deeply enriches the maia.  It‟s a builder of maia, if 
you will, block by block, literally, in a sense.  And there is all this talent that‟s waiting 
there.  There is a dilemma, though.  There‟s always the dilemmas, the “this and 
that.”  First of all, the not-self anyway, regardless of what you can understand about 
the evolution of any of these aspects, you can only truly know them in living them.  
It‟s what they‟re for.   
 
The 2nd Line Talent is Deeply Specialized  
I look at the determination and the determination is the Color influence on the 
Design side.  The Color influence in the Design side is something very interesting.  
It's about being open and closed.  It‟s a dietary regimen that insists on very, very 
fixed, very specialized process.  In that one can grasp something about this gift of 
the so-called talent that we‟re always projecting onto the hermit itself, onto that 2nd 
line, to be able to see clearly that this is a deep, deep, deep specialization.  It's not 
one that everybody can call.  It isn‟t, even though they think they may see 
something that they can call; it isn't.  It's very special. 
 
And fulfillment for the 2 is very special.  They‟re waiting for something.  They‟re 
waiting for their lives to unfold.  There‟s nothing designed to be more patient about 
the unfolding of life than the 2/4.  You give me a child that is raised correctly as a 
2/4 and it will look like they actually don't even care.  They're just going to be 
incredibly laid-back, allowing the river to just flow.  If you don't understand that, it 
can certainly give you the wrong impression.  It has to be so specialized.  It‟s like 
Achilles, you can whack them everywhere.  You either had to have inside information 
or the serendipity of the gods on your side to defeat such another.   
 
It is something to grasp about this specialness of the 2.  It is, in its own way, very 
different from the psychological to the physical side wherever the accent happens to 
be for you.  The 6/2s and the 5/2s is another process entirely.  It is about 
understanding this Achilles‟ nature.  It‟s about recognizing that you have a 
vulnerability, a physical vulnerability.  It‟s being aware of that.  I‟m not saying that 
to frighten anybody who happens to be a 6/2 or whatever.  But it‟s simply just the 
reality of the way in which that works.

The 2 Body  
What is interesting about that is that vulnerability because it sounds like a negative 
that‟s a body that can be—how shall I put this—tuned or untuned.  The 2 body is 
very interesting.  The gift is in the body.  It‟s not in the Personality.  The intelligence 
is in the Personality when you're dealing with the 2/4 or the 2/5.  But that 
intelligence is in the body when you're dealing with the 2 body.  So, the nature of the 
form, the health of the body, as an example, becomes something that is very, very 
significant, particularly when you're dealing with the 6/2 because of the mutative 
pressure on being a 6th line being in the tripartite life process and all of those things 
that are part of it. 
 
Having the vulnerability, by the way, understanding that means that it‟s a double-
edged sword, there‟s something physically in you to be developed.  It has to be 
developed.  That‟s your place of this vulnerability.  And if it's not developed, this 
becomes a negative.  This is really the way that the physical talent works itself out in 
the 2 body.  So, this is a case where, for example, you have a child that is a 6/2 and 
they are physically able to play an instrument and show talent or skill in playing that 
instrument, but how difficult it is to get their Personality to actually commit to being 
involved in that. 
 
Remember that most human beings are not-self.  These are usually the children that 
are deeply gifted that the parents give up on because the Personalities of the 
children aren‟t interested.  Most of you either in your own lives or in your family or 
the extended groupings that you know well, this is a phenomenon that you see over 
and over and over again.  One of the things about understanding the 2nd line as it 
applies to the body is the need to be able to find what needs to be physically 
nourished. 
 
The 2s are the Most Discerning of all Number Themes  
Now, the thing that is interesting about that is that the 2 draws recognition.  
Unfortunately, the recognition is projection so in terms of the not-self it‟s very, very 
difficult to read that.  It‟s just difficult to read that.  None of this works well if you're 
not in your experiment.  It‟s only by operating through Strategy and Authority that 
you can make those decisions without the mind and you actually can begin to see 
what is correct for you.  It‟s all about the discernment.  And 2s are the most 
discerning of all numbers themes.  No number theme is more discerning than the 2.  
No matter where you look it is very, very discerning.  Its whole process is built on 
that.  The ability to discern what others can't.  At the same time, it‟s the inability in 
the not-self to be able to discern anything, where you see the classic in the 2/4 
burnout where it just burns out.   
 
There are these themes that are there underneath.  They‟re not endowed in the 
same way relative to everybody‟s line configuration.  As I said, the chains are always 
different; there are all these different chains.  But it‟s still about understanding that 
there is an infrastructure value that has risen up into this script.  These are elements

that are part of the script of what it is to be a hermit.  The sensitivity to it, the 
recognition of it through the sensitivity to it is something that can only emerge out of 
your own process, only out of your own process, because in the end this is 
something that you're here to witness as a passenger consciousness.  It‟s what your 
passenger consciousness is about, is to be able to see the living theoretics, to see all 
this in operation.  
 
I want to go back to the 6/2 and the 5/2 experience in talking about the 2nd line 
body.  The 2nd line body, if you‟re looking at that body underneath that, if you're 
looking at the archetype of what the 2nd Color determination is, this whole thing 
about being closed and opened, remember that's not always going to be the case.  
And yet, it is something that is a part of what it is in that script of that 2nd line being.  
It‟s an element that is there in the mix. 
 
Don’t Jump to Conclusions  
Now again, this course is general in its nature.  If you‟re students who have 
participated in Rave Psychology and Primary Health System where we have studied 
all of these various levels, the added values that are there in all that information is 
obviously present.  For many of you much of the terminology is often very new.  And 
I caution you that I am treating this very much superficially in the sense of the 
derived information.  And you have to be very careful about jumping to conclusions 
because the fact of the matter is that there are so many possibilities to the way in 
which a 2nd line is fed its particular spirit.  
 
What I'm interested in here it is what are the various things that emerge in the 
script.  What‟s there in the line itself?  Basically, it's there to help you to be able to 
interpret the value in the line.  Let's take an example.  I just threw open a Rave 
I‟Ching on my desk and I‟ve got the 47th gate, and I'm looking at the 6th line, the line 
of Futility, so let me get down to the 2: Ambition.  It says: The ambition and drive to 
overcome personal oppression in order to achieve security.  Now, every single 
element we've looked at can become an element that is a part of the way in which 
that characteristic of that line is going to operate because this is the way that it 
works.  
 
So, that theme that is underneath, for example, the Personality 2nd Color theme that 
says that one has the genius to know that to wait can also mean success and 
somehow knowing that you can wait for it.  Now, that may not be exactly what's 
going to be there, as we well know, it could be a totally different chain, but again, 
I'm talking about the evolution in the construct in its continuity that within the 
characteristic of this line there is that value.  At least it is an attribute that you can 
add to your understanding of the way this could be, might be played out. 
 
Of course, what we get to see is that in fact this need to overcome personal 
oppression that this is somebody that there will be a tendency in them to see that 
this is something that may pass, this oppression.  Now, if they actually had a 2nd 
Color, obviously that would be a very dynamic theme.  But if they don't, it doesn't

mean that this particular little quality isn't there, it just means it is not a major thing, 
but it‟s still in the mix.   
 
Each and every one of you has a chain that reaches a line that becomes the way in 
which you express yourself in this life physically or psychologically.  Think about 
that, because this is what we're looking at.  And all of that together through the 
various mechanics that we now understand in Human Design, all of that together 
becomes the platform through which you live out your holistic life. 
 
Lines are By-Products of a Whole Evolutionary Process  
So, I don‟t want to confuse anyone, because I see that‟s a possibility. I just want you 
to be able to have a sense that this is line is not something that just simply exists.  
It is a by-product of a whole evolutionary process to be able to bring the life 
experience, to be able to bring it to manifestation.  Lines are interesting.  What I 
mean by that, and I don‟t mean to be cute, but basically they only exist holistically.  
This is what they‟re all for.  The only time that in essence you really get to see the 
line is when you get to see the whole configuration laid out.  This becomes the 
theme on the surface.   
 
I did readings for about 15 years.  I rarely even touched on lines in those readings, 
because the fact is when you're doing an analysis for somebody it‟s not the lines that 
are important, it's the overall perspective of the graph itself and the not-self and the 
openness and splits and this and that that really are what it's all about.  And even 
introducing the nuance of lines is something that only becomes really a value to 
somebody who enters into the experiment themselves.  It begins to open up a 
deeper understanding.  But the line itself is a generic.  As I said, it's a script.  
 
The deeper you go into this process, the more you begin to see that your cognitive 
potential is something that is so profound and it‟s so broad-based.  It covers such 
incredible territory.  And in linking this downward I want you to appreciate this 
process.  The way in which the crystals of consciousness operate, the way in which 
the information moves through the crystals is that when the neutrino information is 
exiting the crystals, it's only when this is held together by the Monopole through its 
capture frequency that the illusion of these lines emerge on the surface.  The script 
is the holistic synthesis.  Underneath is what it's all about, how it plays out. 
 
It‟s not about, if you understand this, that that‟s what makes the difference.  
Awareness is always a value, but it is your process that makes the difference.  The 
moment that you're a 2nd line body and you‟re living correctly is the moment that 
your potential is something that is going to be called out, your physical potential will 
be called out.  And in that physical potential being called out, because you're going 
to be making decisions according to your Strategy and Authority, you're going to 
have the discernment to recognize what call is correct for you.  And when a call is 
correct, regardless of what your type happens to be, you get the signature moment: 
the peace that comes that you finally got the call, the satisfaction that comes that

you finally got the call, the success that comes when you finally got the call, the 
surprise that you finally got the call.  It's there. 
 
The 2 and the 5: Projection  
It‟s only then that you will discover what it is, because I don't think that most people 
recognize the talent, that gift, that 2 in the other.  I don‟t think they recognize it at 
all.  They project on it.  This is one of the most important themes always to keep in 
mind about the harmonic of the 2 and the 5, that this is where all projection is, 
whether it‟s internalized personal projection because again remember that the 2nd 
line is the heart of the lower trigram process.  It is a heart of looking inward.  It is 
the projection of looking inward; whereas, the 5 is the projection looking outward.  
It's very different.  That hermit is always drawing that internal projection, but it's a 
projection.  And projection is always determined by the awareness of the projector, 
pardon my expression, but it is.  So, that person that says to the 2 “I see something 
in you,” they may see something but that doesn't mean that they're seeing what is 
specific and what is correct for that 2; it doesn‟t mean that at all.   
 
So many of these children that are 2s that is projected on them, for example, the 2 
body children, you can see their turmoil, particularly in the 6/2 where they‟re going 
to go through the 3rd line phase the first Saturn cycle of their life.  Their physical 
talent is going to be misinterpreted.  So, they'll be sent to ballet or karate or this or 
that or whatever the thing may be, the fact is, it is going to simply be a projection of 
the parent on what they think they see in their child's talented body in where they 
project on that child.  The same thing is true with the Personality.  It just operates in 
a different way. 
 
The 2nd Line is Closed Off  
It‟s something to grasp about the dilemma of the 2 in terms of what happens to in 
the not-self world, particularly as a child and adolescent where you're constantly 
being projected on and therefore you're being moved in directions that are 
fundamentally unhealthy for you.  To be a 2 is to understand that you are here to be 
closed off.  Look at the 59.2.  The 59th gate, Dispersion, connected with our 
intimacy, our sexuality.  It is a gate of our genetic imperative.  The 2nd line is deeply 
closed off.  It just is.  It‟s just deeply closed off.  And it doesn't mean that it can 
never be intimate.  But it does mean that is very, very, very selective about 
intimacy. 
 
This is one of the keys of understanding the 2, how careful they have to be in terms 
of the way in which they allow themselves to be open when in fact they're not 
designed to be open at all.  It‟s so interesting to see the continuity in all this.  You go 
down to the Color, you go to the determination and you see it‟s opened and closed, 
this is the whole thing for the hermit to grasp: when to be open, when to be closed.

Most of the time you‟re closed; but, when to be open.  The not-self cannot answer 
that question.  There is just simply no way it can answer that question. 
 
Well, the suffering is there.  I think that 2nd line beings get smashed a lot.  They‟re 
not like 3rd line beings that have this incredible resiliency where they can just get 
themselves back on their feet or whatever is necessary, or whether it‟s resiliency 
mentally that they have.  For the 2 it can be very shattering.  That is, they do get 
this disdain from others when they don't fulfill their promise.  For instance, that child 
that the father thinks should be the great athlete or the mother that thinks it should 
be the great “this or that,” whatever the case may be, when the child doesn‟t fulfill 
that, what kind of heavy weight that is placed in that child in terms of the frequency 
that it receives for that.   
 
The same thing is true for the mental plan where the projection is on the child in 
terms of its mental ability, as an example, and it's just not there, at least it‟s not 
there in the way in which it‟s projected.  The child is expected because the parent 
sees the spark, the mental intelligence, that there is this expectation that the child is 
going to do great in the exam, but the body is uncomfortable and it's a Generator 
and it's full of buzz and piss and vinegar and it‟s got gates or lines or things that 
distract it and it doesn't end up doing that well.  And of course, the child is blamed 
and the body is punished, and the story goes on and on and on and on. 
 
The 2nd Line Child  
I feel for the children.  It is what the knowledge always brings me to, particularly 
when I look at things from this kind of perspective.  It is so obvious to me how this 
billion plus population of 2s what they're going through.  Half of them are depressed 
about their physical potential in this life and the other half are depressed about their 
Personality potential, their psychological potential.  All those calls that fail lead them 
to believe that it's them.  It‟s the not-self world after all; it‟s the not-self mind.  It‟s 
the not-self mind punishing them because they didn't fulfill somebody else's 
projection.  It‟s brutal. 
 
With the 5, it‟s the other way.  The outside punishes them for not filling themselves.  
In the 2, they punish themselves.  It‟s an internal process.  The not-self 2 punishes 
itself for not being able to fulfill the projection of others—“why couldn‟t I do that?”  
And, they become very desperate.  They also get to a place where they shut 
themselves off completely.  They shut themselves off completely, which is what they 
are very capable of.   
 
And there is only finally a crack left in their armor, that Achilles‟ place, that one 
place, that one thing, that one whatever it may be, that is able to transform the 
closed into the open, is able to bring out the deep potential of this being.  And at the 
same time, as long as the crack is there, as long as there is a touch of that potential 
that is there, then they are inherently one with the river when they‟re correct and 
that even though it's a little crack that can be pierced by precisely the right call, 
whatever that call may be.

The 2 is Waiting for Something to Happen  
I keep referring to the call and I think that often this is an assumption that it has to 
be acoustic.  It certainly does not have to be acoustic.  It can be visual, experiential, 
whatever you want to call it.  It is simply the precise catalyst necessary.  The thing 
about a 2 is that a 2 is waiting for something to happen.  This is what they're about.  
They‟re waiting for something to happen and they can wait for a long time.  It‟s like 
that seed that can sit in the drawer for 10 years and you put it in the ground and all 
of a sudden there it is.  This is the 2.  There is this waiting.   
 
One of the things that you get to see when you're dealing with the not-self and 
you‟re dealing with numbers like a billion plus, that the doors are basically closed for 
the beings, that they have no way of discerning.  They've been burned too many 
times and the unique, the special, the beautiful, the differentiated wonder that is 
there in their nature is not something that comes out.  So, they themselves don't get 
to leave the hermitage, they don't get to break out of the chrysalis and fly away as 
butterfly, they don't get to live the phenomenon that is there in them.  And of 
course, this is what they‟re here for. 
 
Nothing else waits for awakening except the 2.  This is the 2.  It‟s not that it is not 
there within it.  It is.  But something has to bang into it.  This is the dilemma of 
being lower trigram, something always has to show up, something has to kick the 
door, something has to bang it into action, and something has to make it happen, 
something out of the blue.  And for the hermit something out of the blue, if you're 
not-self, is torment.  They‟re really sad after they been burnt out when their only 
response is leave me alone, that I'm better off here in my shell and this is the way 
it‟s going to be and this is the way it‟s going to stay.  It‟s not what the 2 is about.  
 
You look at the way serendipity operates.  This is how I look at my Design, how good 
fortune shined.  And I look at my 40th gate; I have a hanging 40th gate pointed at an 
undefined emotional system.  The 40th gate is the great gate of denial.  It‟s the gate 
that denies God and denies love and denies friendship and denies the world, denies 
itself, it can deny anything.  And at the same time it is a gate of the love of work and 
obviously a deep link in the success of the tribe in that it provides the necessary 
work to be able to organize the tribal arrangement that‟s lived out through the 
channel of Community.  But the 40/37 is also a mystical channel.  It is about 
whether or not there is such a thing.  The 37th gate cries out for an answer.  It says 
“I want to believe.  I need to know.  I need to believe, but I need to know.”   
 
I was somebody that always denied.  I have both gates of denial, both hanging gates 
out of my defined ego.  And it's clear to me that in the 2nd line of the 40th gate is 
where I got my call; deliverance, funny enough, in the language of it.  It is really 
quite something to receive your call.  It doesn't have to be in your profile.  It can be 
in any line, in any position in your Design.  That‟s beauty of the 2nd line.  We all have 
these special places of genius, of deep, deep, deep vulnerability that is ready for 
transformation, transformation that changes the whole life.

The 2 Being is Waiting for their Lives to Change  
It‟s the thing about understanding the 2 being.  They‟re waiting for their lives to 
change.  I don't think there is any more pressure than to be a 2/4 on the Cross of 
the Sleeping Phoenix.  Wow, what pressure, that call, that change, because we tend 
to look at them within their confined spaces.  We tend to see them in those 
environments and we tend to define them by the environment.  And that is not what 
they are about, because oh boy they are totally different beings when they emerge.  
The not-self hermit is like a scene out of Waiting for Godot.  It‟s like the thing is 
never going to come.   
 
The beauty of what it is to be in your experiment to be a 2 and to known deeply 
within yourself, deeply within yourself that whatever it is, it is out there and you only 
have to be ready.  You don't have to be anything else.  You don't have to be more 
than you are, which is what others want from you, but they want you to be more of 
what you are based on how they see you within the confines of your environment.  
And oh how different you are when you leave that behind, but you have to have the 
call.  And it has to be the right time, and it has to be correct.   
 
The Not-Self Hermits are Shut-Ins  
We have a very, very sad world.  The shut-ins—they have this expression, shut-ins, 
people who can‟t get out who are usually the disabled or the elderly.  But that's the 
not-self hermits for me.  They‟re shut-ins.  They're not ready for the world now.  
They‟ve lost all sense of we have what it takes, the natural cockiness, something 
quite endearing about that sort of natural cockiness.  But it‟s not there in most 2s.  
You don't feel it.  And it‟s not about a cockiness because they are egotistical; it‟s just 
the frequency, this comfort in their own skin, in their own gift, because if you can 
really see it, you will see them. 
 
I don‟t know who that was who sent it to me, it was quite awhile ago, so I don‟t 
remember precisely, but anyway, it was a contest in England, one of these Idol 
contests, looking for talent in people.  It was a young man, I don't know how old he 
was, you looked at this kid and he looked like your average teenager next-door kind 
of—I don‟t think he was a teenager, I think he was in his early 20s, but he looked 
very, very young.  And then he started to sing in this unbelievable operatic tenor.  It 
didn‟t look right.  I was watching it on YouTube and for a moment I thought, nah, 
this is a setup.  It‟s really a setup.

that really sees what's there, who calls it out.  And then it‟s magical, they‟re 
transformed.   
 
They are something else.  I've seen this in people, I've seen this in musicians, and 
I‟ve seen this.  It‟s just something else.  And then you get to see it.  The gift 
particularly in the 2nd line body when that gift has been nurtured, because the body 
has to be trained, it has to be properly nurtured, wow, what that is.  The sharpness, 
the power that is there in the 2 Personality; remember it carries a 2/4, 2/5 
combination as a potential underneath, which means that either going to externalize 
or universalize when the call comes.  This is where something really different 
emerges.   
 
Operate According to Your Strategy and Authority  
I'm always waiting for the same thing.  It seems to be my journey in this life.  And 
I've gotten old watching this movie.  I‟m 21 years in Human Design and I didn't get 
it when I was young.  I see that there's only one thing that you can do.  You have to 
radically embrace the process.  It's the only way that you can really learn this.  
There is so much resistance that conditioning brings into the life, unbelievable 
resistance.  You may be a 2 and you may understand what I'm saying to you now 
and grasp all of that, but if you're not operating according to your Strategy and 
Authority it doesn't mean a damn thing, it doesn't mean anything.  
 
One of the first things that we understand at the deepest levels of this knowledge at 
the psychological level is that your mind cannot help you there.  It cannot.  Your life 
cannot be controlled by your mind, dictated to by your mind, that you‟re never truly 
going to find the gift, whatever the gift may be in you and not just in your profile, 
but in any 2nd line that‟s anywhere there in your Design.  The only way that that's 
going to emerge is out of your correctness, it can‟t emerge out of anything else.  It 
doesn‟t emerge because you think you understand it.  
 
One of the great seductions—I‟m a 5 after all—one of the great seductions of this 
knowledge is that it‟s so damn interesting, and it is.  And it seems endless.  I‟ve 
been teaching 21 years and I'm still teaching it.  But this isn‟t what it‟s about.  I‟ve 
spent all these years teaching this knowledge because it is clear to me that this is a 
science and as a science it demands elaboration to the finest detail.  But to be lost in 
the knowledge and think that the knowledge itself can help you, that‟s not true.  It‟s 
something to be deeply aware of.  I would prefer a simple player who experiments 
with their Design and lives it and lives to tell the tale, than somebody who studies 
and doesn‟t live it.   
 
Recognition of Signposts  
The knowledge is for living.  What the knowledge in this sense can bring you is 
recognition of signposts.  So you understand something about what it is to be a 2

and then you get to witness it as your process.  You get to see the validity of it; you 
get to see the truth.  Every truth, every moment that you operate correctly adds to 
your ability to trust in yourself and in your process.  It's only in that way that all of 
this becomes something that is not theory, but becomes something that not only do 
you live its expression, but you see the expression in others; the Projectors amongst 
you who are going to be able to recognize line thematics in the way in which people 
present themselves.  The scripts, all these scripts; the profile and its role and the 
cross, this character that you live is this life, how deeply you can enrich its process.  
Strategy and Authority is the catalyst.

Lecture Three 
The Third Line: The Martyr 
 
 
Welcome to all of you.  We come to one of 
my favorites.  The 3rd line is always 
something that has fascinated me.  It was 
one of the keys for me when I first began 
my work in introducing the knowledge 
because I knew that the 3rd line beings, 
that is, those beings that have a 3rd line in 
their profile, I realized that they had gone 
through an enormous amount of trial and 
error and what that brought to them 
psychologically relative to whatever the 
theme of their design happened to be.   
 
The serendipity is that though I am a 5/1, I 
have an unusual mental configuration.  That is, all of the activations that I have 
mentally in the Ajna Center, that 3rd line conceptualizing has always given me a 
certain sensitivity to the nature of the 3rd line process, because in many ways I 
watched my not-self mind play out 3rd line themes for decades, and what that cost 
and what that meant, it is really quite something, the 3rd line. 
 
The Tonal Construct: Left-ness is Strategic 
In this particular journey that I've been taking, I've been taking you through themes 
of continuity in the numbers themselves as we move from below to the surface.  And 
I think here is one of those classic examples of how profoundly one can reassess 
surface knowledge when one has the depth.  Tonal architecture, that is, the tonal 
construct, the tonal construct is divided into a left-ness and a right-ness.  This is the 
nature of the tonal construct.  And the tonal construct is based on three binaries: 
Splenic, Ajna and Solar Plexus binary.  And basically when you're looking at the left 
side you're looking at 1st, 2nd and 3rd Tones.  When you‟re looking at the 3rd Tone 
you‟re actually looking at the completion of what we describe as left-sidedness which 
we have a keynote for that, which is „strategic.‟ 
 
Now, something to understand about the nature of strategic as it applies to the way 
in which our cognition operates.  Everything about the inherited cultures and 
civilizations that we have are rooted in the seven-centered being that dominated this

plane for 85,000 and 90,000 years, leading up to approximately 1781 with a sort of 
grace period for them slowly dying off.  In other words, for most of what we 
understand as the history of our kind that has been dominated by the seven-
centered being and the seven-centered being was specifically strategic.  In other 
words, the peak of their architectural development was rooted in the strategic 
capacity and the strategic capacity wedded to vision, seeing, outer vision, the 
outside world. 
 
Binary Vision  
There is something very extraordinary about the way we see, the way we evolved.  
We have this very, very specific binary vision, not something that is common for 
example in mammals.  We have this very specific binary vision with our eyes very 
close together in the front of our faces.  It gives us a tremendous potential, this 
binary vision, this gives us the potential to be able to create the illusion of depth.  In 
other words, it‟s the ability to be able to frame a landscape and to frame it in such a 
way in which it has a three-dimensional quality.  This is an incredible gift.  This is the 
thing that allowed us to rise up above the 1 and the 2, that is, the fundamental 
strategic infrastructure of defense and offense in order to survive in the world as a 
bio-form.   
 
The Dropping of the Larynx  
The 3 is something else.  This is an evolutionary leap.  This is the advent of the 
neocortex.  This is the beginning of a very, very sophisticated creature, a creature 
that is able to assess and focus on its environment.  Now, we have two gifts.  This 
particular ability within the binocular vision is something that developed over a 
period of about four half-million years.  But none of it in that development 
evolutionarily speaking gave us a specific advantage until another mutation took 
place.  That's the mutation that took place 85 to 90,000 years ago, that is, the 
dropping of the larynx, one of the most important mutations for what we are. 
 
Think about the nature of communication.  If you look at the history and the 
development of mammalian life on this planet, all mammals, at least mammals that 
we cohabitate with, all mammals show a certain level of intelligence that is 
recognizable to us.  It is clear.  For those that have watched mammals in the wild or 
for those of you that like those kinds of television shows, you can see that they have 
certain instinctive ways in which they communicate to each other.  Some of them 
seem to be relatively sophisticated given handicaps of a 15-gate matrix that they are 
dealing with, and the fact that they‟ve got a Design Crystal that's creating a form 
that doesn't house the possibilities of the kind of brain system that we‟re endowed 
with. 
 
But the moment you move to the visual cortex, the moment you move to this place, 
is the moment that you‟re really getting to what is the true modern human.  And this

dropping of the larynx opened up what truly makes a difference between us and the 
mammal.  In essence, it is the only thing that really makes the difference between 
us and the mammal.  It is our ability to be able to communicate in more and more 
and more and more sophisticated ways.  After all, it is the naming of things that 
expands the Maia, and it is the universal recognition of symbology for the same 
thing, the glyph for the same thing that creates the ability for enormous amounts of 
information to be shared.   
 
It is through this communication that began 85 to 90,000 years ago that this ability 
coupled with our binocular vision gave us the ability to create strategies that not only 
provided for the fundamental needs of our survival, but did more, it turned us into 
the conquerors, it turned us into what Lao Tzu saw as the mad beings that were 
leaving behind the natural order, because that‟s what it created.  This is what this 
focused outer vision does. 
 
The Creators of the Maia  
There‟s a basic law.  You get to a point in which your survival is relatively speaking 
assured, then what?  This is about the development of consciousness.  All of this is 
about the development of the potential of awareness.  When I look at 3s I look at the 
creators of the maia.  If you have listened to my lectures on the 1st line level and my 
lectures about the nature of the 3rd line I always talk about its mastery of the 
material plane, because after all, this is what the 3rd line is about.  It is the one that 
is really here to be able to function on the material plane.  That‟s its nature.  Where 
does this come from?  It is rooted deep, deep underneath that in the continuity of 
the structuring, in that continuity lies something that is very, very profound.  They 
were the makers of the maia.  They created the maia.   
 
This is what this 3rd Tone does in the world now still.  Our maia has expanded 
enormously.  Every time you give something a name and every time that name is 
shared, the maia has been expanded.  We've expanded the maia unbelievably.  And 
we‟re the masters of it, the masters of the 3rd line beings.  Look at their bodies, the 
1/3s and the 6/3s.  This is a very different kind of body.  It is incredibly resilient.  
It‟s the kind of body that you beat on it and you beat on it and it doesn‟t make a 
damn bit of difference, at least for awhile.  
 
Oh, yes, you can eventually beat them down, you can.  It is, after all, the martyr.  At 
some point they can be absolutely overwhelmed in their not-self life and truly beaten 
down.  These are the bodies that need to be looked after.  This is the armor for 
anyone who has a 3 body, it‟s their body.  This is their great gift because the body 
carries this unique power to deal with the maia and the maia is dense.  And 
everything about this maia is about the correct determination that gets you to the 
right environment.  One of the things that I see very clearly about 3rd line bodies is 
that the bodies need healing.  Most 3rd line body beings are very, very aware of 
difficulties and sensitive areas in their body.  They take a lot.

Color 3 Motivation: Desire 
They‟re designed to deal with a certain level of resistance that others are not.  This is 
the gift.  Without them you‟ve got a problem with the maia.  There‟s a long way from 
the architect‟s plans to the finished building, from the Tone to get to the line.  It‟s a 
long way to travel.  At that tonal level it‟s all about building the maia, it‟s not about 
whether anything that one is building in the maia is true or not.  When did we learn 
how to lie?  Isn‟t that a wonderful question?  I hate to be rhetorical.  The maia is full 
of lies.  And it‟s full of lies because we are strategic.  That is, the strategic root that 
is there in that 3 and if you carry that 3 to the surface, to the gateway to the 
surface, to the Color, the 3rd Color motivation is desire, the desire to lead, the desire 
to follow the desire.   
 
We tell lies in order to succeed in the maia.  It is the most obvious thing that we 
inherited from the moment that the seven-centered being was able to begin to 
communicate, it started to lie.  I can‟t give you the exact date, but some time 
between 85 and 90,000 years ago somebody uttered the first lie to save their ass or 
whatever.  The moment that you have the mind as both inner and outer authority 
lies are natural.  They cannot be helped.  By the time you get up to the line level you 
go through this evolutionary process that it‟s at the line level that you see that the 3 
gets suckered into the maia in order to find out it doesn't work, whatever that 
happens to be.   
 
But the maia does seduce them.  It pulls on them.  And they're here to find lies in 
the maia.  That is, when they‟re correct.  There are not enough voices that say this 
doesn‟t work and that doesn‟t work.  There are not enough people who are wagging 
their fingers at all the lies that are published every day on this plane, are spoken by 
so many human beings every moment of every day all the time, nobody, nobody, 
nobody really just puts their hands up and says stop that now.  If you want to be a 
martyr, this is something to be a martyr for, to stop the lie. 
 
For the seven-centered being it wasn't a bad thing.  Read Machiavelli.  It was cruel 
and you had this whole game between: is it the truth or not?  And that leads to all 
kinds of lovely archetypal dramas, all the things that make up the entertainment of 
complex strategies when you're trying to figure out how who is real and who isn't, 
and what's real and what isn't.  And it becomes the delusional world of the not-self, 
it‟s madness.  But so goes the play, on and on.   
 
Dietary Regimen: Hot or Cold 
This is the great pain for the 3.  You see it in their determination, in the continuity to 
the 3rd Color on the Design side.  Their dietary regimen is manipulative—hot or cold.  
They have very strange digestive systems.  They either run too cold or they run too 
hot, and they need to be adjusted.  And until their digestive systems are adjusted, 
they're not running at the right temperature and if they're not running at the right 
temperature, they‟re not going to be able to be resilient enough to be able to 
penetrate the maia.  I always think of the 3rd line as something that burrows its way

into the side of a hill.  And as it‟s burrowing its way into the side of the hill, it‟s 
throwing out all the crap as it goes along looking for that “it-ness” that belongs to its 
own personal destiny that it is deeply absorbed, whatever it may be.  But you can‟t 
get there until you pass through the maia of lies, no 3 can.  
 
I remember my father's library.  I was very lucky.  My father was an avid reader, 
one would say obsessive.  He had an enormous collection of books.  From a very 
early age I just lived in a world of all of those lies, all those stories, all those tales.  
You begin to see how duplicitous this seven-centered being was.  If you walk up to a 
Generator that's correct and you say to them “do you love me,” and they go “uh-uh” 
there is something absolutely exquisite about that.  It may have its dramatic 
consequences, we all know those things.   
 
We’re Here for the Truth  
We‟re here for the truth.  And I don't mean that in any cosmic sense, I don‟t at all.  I 
mean in the very deepest personal sense.  Think about the way your mind works 
when somebody asks you something.  Watch it work when somebody asks you 
something.  And your mind is looking for an angle: How do I answer this; how should 
I answer this; should I answer this; which way should I answer this; why are they 
asking me in the first place, all of these things that the mind goes through its movie.  
Oh, it just distorts everything.   
 
This was the seven-centered being‟s life.  This is what „outer vision binocular 
communicative strategy‟ became.  It was very easy to take that combination of brain 
function, visual cortex function, take those combinations and be able to dominate the 
mammalian world.  It was easy to do and it was done quickly.  And then what?  Well, 
each other of course, and getting more sophisticated all the time.  Our whole history 
that we inherited from the seven-centered being is nothing more than “is it truth or 
is it lies,” and how addicted we are to that nonsense, the argumentation about the 
validity of the Bible, the Koran, the “this,” the “that,” and the other thing.   
 
Ah, martyrs, that‟s what I really like.  What I really like about my mind is that it 
looks at something and it sees that it‟s bullshit and it says so.  And it's me.  It's not 
about what you‟re supposed to say or what you think that somebody else wants to 
hear from you or how you think you should phrase it in order to make it easier for 
them, or this or that or the other.  It‟s when all the lies start.  They just do.  The 
thing about the 3rd line being is that the material malaise that is on this planet—at 
the very first Ibiza event I did The 64 Money Lines, the 64 gates of money, 
materialism.  They were all just 3rd lines, 3rd lines of the 64 gates; the material 
plane.   
 
Look at our material plane; look at the dysfunction on the material plane.  It‟s 
beyond words.  You have people in the world right now who can‟t even afford rice.  
That‟s when things are really tough.  The material plane is an enormous mess.  And 
it‟s an enormous mess because 3rd line beings are not-self, they‟re in transference, 
they are suffering and they been beaten down and they‟re basically just nothing but

the deep, deep underlying pessimism that shrouds this planet, the gloom of this 
planet. 
 
3rd Line Beings Can Reconstruct the Maia  
They're the ones that can reconstruct the maia.  Nobody else can reconstruct the 
maia because they carry that within them.  That's what they‟re really good at.  But 
it's about a world that is stripped of its falsehoods.  That simply means that you 
stand alone in your own authority.  I don't know if somebody else is this or that, 
true, not true.  I honestly don‟t care anymore.  I don‟t.  It doesn‟t really make any 
difference to me.  What matters to me is that I live by my authority.  And what I say 
is true for me.  I have never claimed anything else.  This is the way it is.  
 
It‟s only when you get to this place where you can be your own authority that you 
are not then going to be caught up in the lies of the maia.  And for a 3, it‟s 
everything.  They need their resilience not for taking punishment and being beaten 
down for their failures.  Their resilience is designed for something else; it‟s designed 
to drive the maia forward.  It‟s what it‟s for.  They are, after all, the leaders.  They 
are the ones that call the followers.  That‟s what they are about.   
 
A martyr, it‟s quite a term, in many ways unfortunate.  But the thing about the 3 
that fascinates me so deeply is that they will sacrifice themselves.  And they will 
sacrifice themselves not for truly the other or cause, although it appears that way.  
This very resilience that is inherent in them is in fact something that can lead them 
to surrender in the most difficult of situations.  This is what this physical resiliency 
that is part of the 3 body, why that is so significant.  It's different when you look at it 
from the Personality.  The 3/5 and the 3/6 from the Personality perspective the 
dilemma is always the way in which the distortion can come so quickly, what 
happens to the not-self personality, what happens to the martyr when it is stripped 
of its cognition, when it doesn't know what to fight for, what it doesn't know what to 
stand up to, it just doesn't know.  This is the whole thing. 
 
I watch it so deeply in my life.  Both my sons are 1/3s.  You see this enormous 
power in them, this power of recovery, this power to be persistent.  And everything 
for them is about, if you point a 1/3 in the right direction, if they go in the right 
direction, this is the dilemma for them, because despite the fact that they are lower 
trigram and despite the fact that they are self-absorbed in their process, the extreme 
of the 1/3, but it doesn't matter, the 3/5, the 3/6 [an interruption]. 
 
The 3 Personality Does Not Feel They’re Good Enough  
Let me go back to the Personality.  The dilemma for the 3 Personality is that you 
have a mind that is always going to think that it‟s not good enough.  It‟s a not-self 
mind that is always going to see itself as not good enough; not inferior, which is 
quite a different thing, just not good enough.  And of course this is something that

can be deeply, deeply painful.  It goes back to decision-making, obviously, it has to.  
It has to be seen that the distortion that takes place in the not-self is enormous.  
And that the great vitality of these 3s is not spent on moving through the maia in the 
way in which they were intended, but being driven backward over and over again by 
going in the wrong direction and smashing into things that eventually break them 
down. 
 
And whether they break down at the mental level in which their particular discomfort 
becomes something that is unbearable, this mental perception that no matter what 
they do that things just don't work for them.  And whether that's love or jobs, 
whatever it is, after a while that becomes a terrible burden and you end up with 
human beings that in a sense give up on the spirit of their lives.  It can be 
devastating.   
 
You think about all the martyr Generators, 67% of humanity is Generator and 
basically 1/6th  of them or whatever, it‟s a lot of people anyway, think about all 
these martyr Generators, think about that deep theme of frustration for them in their 
lives, put that into the context of what it is to be a 3 and see what level of suffering 
we have on this planet.  Over and over and over again in my career I have given so 
many, particularly in the early years, so many lectures for 3s to get them out of this 
“woe is me and the shit falls on me,” and all that stuff, to get them out of the Jonah 
complex because there is a Jonah complex that builds up, this sense that they‟re bad 
luck and things just don‟t work.  You have a theme of bonds made and broken; you 
have a theme that is very profound. 
 
3rd Line Beings Don’t Have to be the Martyr  
Of course you can see that bonds made and broken is actually—you'll pardon my 
black sense of humor—but it leads back very nicely to the evolution out of the 
strategic lives developed by the seven-centered being in order to distort the natural 
order.  We are not creatures, we‟re very different.  The moment that you have the 
map, the moment you have the mechanical way in which you can operate in this life 
you don't have to be the martyr.  Well, you don't have to be the martyr, not the 
martyr in the sense we understand it as it‟s played out in this plane as some 
wretched suffering because that‟s what it is.  That‟s not what it‟s about.  It‟s not 
intended to be like that.  It isn't.  This is very much not-self terminology.  It means 
the resilience to stand by your own truth, “yes indeed that‟s true,” but the resilience 
to stand by your own truth doesn't mean you‟re a martyr.  It doesn‟t mean you have 
to be a martyr at all.  The resiliency to stand with your own truth is your power to 
survive in the world.  It‟s what we‟re all about. 
 
This stops being martyr, somebody who's ready to suffer because all 3s are ready to 
suffer, they come out of the womb, they‟re homogenized and they‟re immediately 
ready to suffer.  And whether the suffering is psychological or the suffering is 
physical, it is going to come to their lives because they called it by their very not-self 
nature and it goes deep into their bodies, deep, deep, deep into their bodies, deep 
into their psyche.  You have to understand going back to the history to the seven-

centered being, they were so aggressively strategic.  These are the ones that 
conquered the world.  This is the inheritance of the 3rd line.  And here they are in the 
3rd line being beaten down by the world they conquered, being beaten down by their 
own kind.   
 
Now, isn‟t that something, like the worm ouroborus, the snake eating its tail.  Oh, if I 
could change the life of 3rd line beings you could really change the world.  You can.  
That‟s what they're about.  And the depth of the suffering on this plane is what they 
carry as their baggage.  It‟s this not-self baggage that litters everywhere—the failed 
bonds at all kinds of levels, you have bonds made and broken.  It came from our 
earliest treacheries.  The first lies.  So, the bonds made and broken in the not-self 
become the same thing played out in the drama of it, the martyr's drama, the 
suffering drama, the woe-is-me drama, the “oh it will never work, oh, I can never.”   
 
It‟s like looking at somebody who's the greatest example of anything and they‟re 
saying to you, “I'm useless.  I can‟t do anything.”  They‟re the ones that carry the 
gift.  They are the penetrators of maia; they‟re here to move us forward.  And 
moving forward doesn't mean that we expand the maia.  Moving forward means that 
as nine-centered beings we begin to readjust it to what we are.   
 
There are so many things out there that don't work for the nine-centered being, so 
many things that don't belong to us that are part of the homogenized world, 
allopathic, homeopathic, you name it, this kind of thing, that kind of thing, this 
philosophy, that philosophy, this religion, that religion, all the stuff.  It‟s the martyr 
that says, the martyr in each of us, that stands up and says “for me, it‟s this way.  I 
don‟t know about you.” 
 
And frankly, I don't really care.  If you have something interesting to tell me, I‟ll 
listen about what you think, what your truth is.  Everybody has a right to their truth.  
But it has to be correct, it has to be legitimate, it can‟t come from a perverted 
mental system. 
 
I look at 3s and I say, ah, let‟s change the world.  When I started I was so naive.  
When I started 21 years ago I really thought that if I could get Generators and 3rd 
line beings to understand all the crap that they've gone through for nothing, that like 
bang, a whole world would automatically change.  Talk about delusional.  I learned 
so quickly how dense the homogenized world is.  How deeply human beings are in its 
grip.  How lucky they have to be to even have a glimpse outside of it, a taste.  It‟s so 
profound.  And those that you see so deeply embedded in the maia, these 3rd line 
beings, it‟s not their fault. They're deeply embedded in the maia because they are 
the maia workers and they're totally dysfunctional and the maia is totally 
dysfunctional as a result.  And the material plane is all screwed up.  It‟s insane, what 
goes on out there.  
 
Whenever I look at any of these things I can go on and on and on with the horror 
stories, these are always horror stories, the not-self is a horror.  The solution is, 
relatively speaking, simple.  And then you understand the choicelessness of it all, 
what fractals mean, what geometries really mean.  You look out in the world and you

wonder who amongst all those who are out there that are lost so deep in the 
homogenization of the world, who is ready.  There's not many.  There isn't.   
 
The Maia Workers are here to Work the Maia 
It's not like I could transform all the 3rd line beings, all the Generators, whatever.  
It‟s become so clear.  And it means if you are a 3rd line being and you are aware of 
this knowledge, you carry a unique kind of responsibility.  It‟s not like I want to put a 
trip on you, because I‟m not.  The reality of it is that if you‟re the maia worker, then 
do your work.  It‟s what the Voice said to me when I met the Voice.  It said, are you 
ready to work.  It wasn‟t a question.  The maia workers are here to work the maia.  
And if they‟re correct, they will slowly, slowly be able to strip the maia at least at 
extreme levels of its follies, of its nonsense, because there's so much of it.  There 
really is.  And we cannot do this without the exalted martyr.  We can‟t.  It‟s a way for 
the fulfillment of the responsibility of the whole strategic inheritance. 
 
The nine-centered being, though it has a left, that left isn't the same.  It's 
conditioned by the fact that there is now a right.  It's different; we‟re different.  
Everything about the nature of how we operate has to be reevaluated within the 
nature of our mechanics.  And again, to see something very clearly that until you get 
to the point of fully grasping that the commitment here is not to a greater 
understanding of the totality, which is a bonus, it is to the establishment of a 
differentiated spirit, both in mind and flesh, a differentiated being, a unique being, 
the fulfillment of the possibility of what it is to be us.   
 
It is natural for each and every one of us to carry an inherent truth.  Our truth; what 
I refer to as outer authority, the ability of our passenger consciousness to be able to 
filter the experiential phenomena without the distortion of the not-self mind and to 
fulfill what is our gift in an extraordinary and evolved way to take this level of 
communication and to transform it, to transform it so that we can begin to meet 
each other in a different way.   
 
It is what it's all about.  The martyr, the 3rd line, is not transpersonal but it cries out 
for something to bang into it.  It is built for that.  It is built for the world, but it must, 
like all things, allow the world to come to it.  And it has to be ready, it has to be 
correct.  For the 3 there‟s always this assumption that they are alone, they are not.  
They will never be alone.  There will always be forces draw to them, always.  Those 
forces that move and shape their personal deep process, banged into.  
 
 One of the things that you learn about at the deepest level of this knowledge is that 
given that we are all objects moving in space, that this navigation is where the key 
is.  For the 3, navigation in the realm of maia is a holy grail of their purpose.  For 
them navigation in the maia is an absolute essential for them, not so much that it 
benefits them more in the sense of what it can do for the vehicle, but in the sense 
that they are designed to be able to affect the maia itself.

3rd Line Beings are the Weavers of the Maia 
The rest of us are caught in the way in which they shape it.  Think about the 3rd line 
beings throughout our history.  They have been the weavers of this maia.  
Generation after generation they have both maintained and expanded it.  This is the 
material world that we live in.  It is why they are made for the material plane.  But 
they are not made to be what we see, that is, to be poisoned and distorted by the 
very world they made.  There's something else for us.  And the answer does not lie 
in the old solutions, because they do not belong to our form.  The answer lies in our 
ability, the appropriateness of our behavioral patterns, the correctness that allows us 
to begin to do what we've never been able to do, which is to communicate.   
 
And you have to understand that those forces that bang into the martyr, that the 
communication with the 3 is one of the most important communications.  For the 3, 
whatever comes its way there is always a message, there is always important 
information.  And it is something that comes in language.  No other line can be more 
deeply affected by an acoustic cue than the 3rd line.  Truly, it can change their whole 
way of life, something they hear.  And not because of where that came from, 
because it doesn‟t matter to them, it‟s how it moves through them that matters.  The 
moment that something changes them, they begin to change their maia.  And as 
they change the maia, they change the maia in the way it works relative to those 
that have contact with them.  Oh, it‟s quite a thing to watch.  It really is see.   
 
The Power of the 3 Moves the Maia Forward  
I've been looking at 3rd line so deeply for so long, and it‟s so clear to me that this is 
the end of what's familiar.  Next week we move on to what isn't really familiar, not 
really, because when you go back down into the architecture you can see that the 1 
to 3 carries a very, very old history.  And the 4 to the 6 is pointed at some future.  
At the martyr we stand at this point of the perfection of our strategic consciousness.  
And at that point of perfection of our strategic consciousness, the ability to 
deconstruct it and to make ourselves whole again, it is not an oddity or unusual or 
funny that Human Design is about strategy.  It is the cleansing of the whole strategic 
evolutionary process, distilled down to just the essence of the way to operate the 
vehicle.  But the future is elsewhere.  
 
So, it says to me that 3rd line beings are a key to whether or not, in essence, those 
of us who are involved in this process really have a destiny of being able to complete 
transformation and transform the coming generations.  It is those that carry the 3 
that in essence are the ones that have the power to be able to move this forward in 
the maia.  And of course, it means that their correctness is something that just 
becomes one of those many other ingredients in transformation.  It's all about slowly 
but surely each of us fulfilling what is possible.  If the martyr, if the 3rd line is not 
correct, then this process of differentiation gets stalled.  It does.  It gets stalled. 
 
The dysfunction, the pessimism, the power of the not-self just gets stalled.  I know 
so many 3rd lines in Human Design, 3rd line beings in Human Design who have been

instrumental in moving this knowledge.  It is not an accident.  It‟s just an obvious of 
what they are as beings in the way in which they make a contribution.  And it isn't 
because they particularly are aware of it in that way.  I don‟t think I‟ve ever 
articulated it particularly like this.  It‟s just simply the by-product of what they are 
ideally suited to.  And the thing is it sounds so cut and dry, but of course, whenever 
you're dealing with designs, you're dealing with differentiation, which means you're 
dealing with incredible nuances, the cross, the profile, the design itself, the this and 
that, there's a lot of this and that that is there that makes it the unique story of how 
that is worked out. 
 
And it always takes me back to the same place.  I've been teaching the details for 21 
years, so there are a lot of details.  It goes on and on.  But knowing the details, it's 
interesting and it‟s what outer authority is supposed to be.  It's interesting.  It‟s 
stimulating.  It‟s entertaining.  But what is much more important is living the process 
of the experiment, deeply, deeply.  If you're a 3rd line being, the deeper you live this 
process, the more powerful the way in which your energy, your power, your 
resiliency, the way in which it works in the world around you.  And remember that 
we are here to learn three lessons very, very deeply, all of us.  We were surrounded 
by very deep 3 conditioning.  It‟s not just the fact that there are 1/3s and 3/5s and 
3/6s and 6/3s.  There's also the fact that the 3/6s and the 6/3s go through in the 
tripartite 6th line process a 3 phase in the first Saturnian cycle.   
 
In other words, there is a disproportionate amount of 3-ness as a theme spread out 
amongst humanity.  If we are going to be moved by its failures, its pain, its 
suffering, its pessimism, its darkness, this is our world, it‟s part of it, a deep part of 
it, colors it.  It gives the maia this favor.  And of course, there are angry martyrs, 
bitter martyrs, frustrated martyrs, disappointed martyrs.  And they're all pessimistic.  
This is our world.  This is how we feel about the maia, this is how we connect to and 
relate it to the maia.  This is the frequencies you meet every day.  It‟s all around us 
everywhere.   
 
And don't take that too personally if you're a 3rd line.  I can weave the same story 
about anything.  I always want to caution you about my enthusiasm as a teacher for 
each of the aspects that I look at.  I always see them as something unique and 
special because they are, they all are.  I find, because they are the diggers on the 
maia plane, they bring so much to us as a possibility.  The martyr mentality, the 
3/5s and 3/6s, how much discovery can be made and that is of extraordinary value, 
both universally and personally that can arise out of those profiles.  There is much 
that can be transformed in the way in which we literally perceive the maia.  
 
The most instrumental in that are the Generator martyrs, because of course only the 
Generators truly generate the life force and do it through the enveloping aura.  If 
they are a frustrated martyr, you‟ve got a huge dark patina that‟s enveloping all over 
the place.  It just does.  Humanity suffers so deeply from fear of survival, that so 
much of humanity is at the lowest end of the ladder and sees no way out.  It doesn‟t.  
And the maia is something that is of us.  We all participate in it together, create it 
together.  And it doesn't mean that that is something that has to look this way.  It 
doesn‟t have to look this way; it doesn‟t have to at all.

Everything the Martyr Touches Brings Value 
But like everything else in this knowledge it begins with one human being at time.  
The perfection of the martyr is that everything that it touches brings value.  It 
touches something, it doesn't work.  Out of that not working comes its discovery, 
comes its power, and comes its strength, because it was the right thing to go wrong.  
Oh how sweet that is for the martyr, the right thing that goes wrong, how deep, how 
impressive is the knowledge that arises out of that that does not carry with it the 
sense of failure.  That carries with it a renewed power.  This is the beauty.  It‟s what 
they‟re about.   
 
They‟re not here to be any more dysfunctional than anything else.  This is always the 
tragedy, because it is simple; Strategy and Authority is simple, but you‟ve got to be 
there at the door and the door has to open and you don't get there yourself.  And as 
not-self you arrive and know not why.  You‟ve got all kinds of stuff you made up as 
to why you happen to be at that place at that point.  And if you know, it happened to 
you, you banged into it, it banged into you.  It showed up.  That‟s what it does for 
those that are ready, that it‟s possible. 
 
Let Go of Your Mind  
And if you‟re not ready and it is not possible, it doesn't show up.  This is the thing 
about choicelessness.  It‟s in the program.  There are numbers, only so many, only 
so many at a time.  They're all these numbers.  It's built into it, only so many 
possibilities.  It‟s why I remind you, particularly all those of you that are newcomers, 
the dedication of being correct is the only way.  There is no other way.  You have to 
let go of your mind, you have to allow what you all are to merge to live and to 
breath.  You have a chance to see your own beauty.   
 
How wonderful it is to see it, to see the essence of what you are standing alone, no 
comparison in its uniqueness.  And in that, the way in which you impact the world 
around you, each of us in our own way, 3rd line beings in the way in which they just 
shape.  They shape the world.  It‟s like the miners that carve away a mountain; 
they‟re shaping the world, digging their way through.   
 
My drift on the 3rd line; I hope you enjoyed that.  To all the 3s, yes indeed, hurray to 
all the 3s.  To every 3 that stands correct, we gain a great deal in this life.  We really

Lecture Four 
The 4th Line: The Opportunist 
 
 
Welcome to all of you.  We enter into the 
journey of getting into the upper trigram 
because the upper trigram brings something 
different.  I've been fascinated all along with 
this dividing point, this marker that is there 
between the 3rd and 4th lines, the fragility 
that exists there, most of which can be 
attributed directly to Color.  That is, we 
know in terms of the way in which Color 
operates that it is deeply impacted by the 4th 
Color, that is, the 4th Color being the root of 
what 
we 
call 
transference 
or 
the 
fundamental instability. 
 
The 4th Line Mantra  
What is so interesting about the 4th line is that the 4th line, in a sense, is desperately 
trying to compensate for what the 4th Color is, which makes the 4th line rather 
interesting in terms of the way in which it operates.  When I was first introducing the 
4th line to people I had a little mantra for them.  That little mantra was: Never leave 
a lover until you have another lover.  Never leave the job until you have another job.  
Never leave your house, give up your lease on your flat unless you have some place 
that you‟ve already arranged to go to.  It was one of those standard things that I 
repeated over and over and over again every time I dealt with the 4th line being.   
 
It‟s interesting when you think about that.  When you think about that as a construct 
of hold onto something, have something that is very secure and from that very 
secure base that's when you can afford to or you can be ready to do what the 4th line 
does, which is network.  But the base is something that is absolutely essential, to be 
able to have that secure platform to work from.  Remember that when we‟re dealing 
with the hexagram structure it is something to always grasp that we are dealing with 
a phenomena of harmonics.  And what we learned from the 1st line is that we learned 
this deep need, this deep foundation in us, this drive, and this deep insecurity in us 
to make sure that we have a solid platform.  So we dig in and we investigate.

There is this fundamental connection that is here when we look tonally, that there is 
this connection when we look at the way in which the tonal binaries are structured, 
that the splendid binary, the root of things in terms of our intelligence, our basic fear 
mechanism, that all of that is very much part of the 1st line process.  Here we have 
the harmonic to this.  And when we‟re moving into that harmonic we're actually 
moving, if we‟re looking downward in the continuity just of the numbers, that we get 
to look at the 4th Tone and we get to see something new.  And it‟s something new.  
And when I say “new” I mean new in the sense that the form is ready to express it.   
 
The Transition from the Seven-Centered Being to the Nine-Centered Being 
One of the ongoing discussions that I have or one of the ongoing themes that is in 
my teaching is to begin to recognize the difference between the seven-centered 
being, which was the being that dominated this plane for about 85 to 90,000 years 
and us, the nine-centered being, that began to emerge in 1781.  We have different 
vehicles.  I've talked a lot about the difference between the Saturnian vehicle and 
the Uranian vehicle, the nature of the Uranian vehicle to bring about this tripartite 
life process that is best expressed in those that have a 6th line profile.   
 
But of course, there's something that is fundamentally different between the seven-
centered and the nine-centered being.  That is, the physical construct, in other 
words, the Design crystals that created the seven-centered being for tens of 
thousands of years, that those particular Design crystals did not allow for the facility 
of what we refer to as 4th, 5th and 6th Tones or in terms of the general language, that 
right tonal cognition.  In other words, the seven-centered being was restricted to 
what we call left tonal architecture, being deeply strategic.  
 
Now there is something in understanding this transition in 1781 to the Uranian 
vehicle, to the Uranian body, in moving into that body the mutation between the 
seven-centered and the nine-centered being is a mutation that took place in the 
visual cortex.  So, you have this great tonal binary between the 3 that is the peak of 
what is a strategic process all of the security issues then focused in a very distinct 
quality of outer vision, the ability to look at the world, to focus the world into a 
three-dimensional phenomena in order to be able to rule it.  And the moment that 
we enter into the phenomena of the nine-centered being, when we get the nine-
centered being, we get to a new model of Design Crystal.   
 
Those of you that are really interested in this subject my last Jovian lecture, which I 
think is the 24th of this month, The Four Points of Exit, The Four Points of Entry,  will 
provide a really very deep explanation of something I've never done, which is really 
get into a long thing over the Design Crystal bundle, but to really understand form 
mutation, not form mutation as much as form evolution; in other words, to 
understand how the form evolution worked and that this change to the Uranian 
vehicle in 1781 is a change in the quality or in the nature of the Design Crystals that 
are forming the foundation of the life process.  So, it‟s a shift in the kind of Design 
Crystals that are available, the kind of Design Crystals that emerged post-1781 were 
crystals that created a bio-form with a mutated visual cortex that was going to be

able to accommodate the 5th and 6th tonal qualities, in that sense the special qualities 
that are able to be demonstrated. 
 
One of the things that I have to caution you about is that the seven-centered being 
was very different in its dynamic and structure, and that rudiments of what we call 4, 
5 and 6 existed in them, but was completely locked into through the harmonies, but 
locked into the strategic.  It‟s only here with the change of the visual cortex and the 
nine-centered vehicle emerging that we have this ability to be able to express these 
cognitive forces.   
 
The 4 is About Inner Vision  
Now, if we're looking at the 4, the 4 is about inner vision.  And basically what it 
represents is a very different kind of way of dealing with stimulation.  The way in 
which the left dealt with stimulation was to focus and the way the right deals with 
stimulation is to open up; in other words, to simply absorb.  So, there is a quality of 
absorption that is here in the 4th Tone that moves through what ultimately we're 
going to deal with in terms of the way in which the 4th Color is going to operate and 
then here to the opportunist.  And again this is only one chain of many in 
relationship to the 4th line, this 4, 4, 4.  But I'm just using it to give you an 
underlying history.   
 
Remember that the best way to understand lines is to recognize that the lines that 
you have in your Design is a script.  You can‟t change the script, it's a script.  But 
how that script is expressed, that‟s something that is uniquely a potential of yours.  
And of course, the expression of that is something that comes from deep within.  So, 
the archetype of opportunists, even though it‟s going to be influenced in so many 
ways by the Color or Tone combinations that are there underneath, the reality is that 
there is an archetypal quality in this continuity of the 4s that is really there in the 
opportunists and needs to really be understood.   
 
The 4 Body needs a Secure Environment  
This base that I started with, this base for the 4 is something that is really, really 
important for them.  You get to see it in the extreme when you see the 4 body, much 
more so than the 4 Personality.  When you're looking at the 4 body, the 1/4s and the 
2/4s, what you get to see in that body is the need for an environment where they 
are going to be very, very insulated and protected.  In other words, remember that 
because the 4 is a harmony to the 1, it doesn't want to be dealing with security 
issues.  It wants to be dealing securely with other beings.  It is a transpersonal line. 
 
Think about lines in your chart.  One of the things about lines in your chart is that it's 
always good to see them from a very simple perspective.  You look at hanging gate 
that you have, and that hanging gate is a 1 or a 2 or a 3 in terms of the lines and 
that hanging gate is not prepared for what's at the other end, it isn‟t.  It is absorbed

in its 1 or its 2 or its 3-ness.  And relative to that it is going to meet the other.  But 
the 4 and the 5 look across always.  They're not even interested in where they're 
coming from.  They‟re much more interested in what's on the other side.  The 
genetic imperative, which is the underlying conditioning theme of the program, is 
something that is very, very powerful if you‟re a 4 or a 5 or a 6 rooted in this new 
openness of sensory intake that‟s built into this new vehicle.  
 
The 4 has to be Smart about Who they Pay Attention To 
That 4th line is able to take in a great deal as long as it‟s secure.  Remember, we‟re 
dealing with the opportunist.  Everything about the 4 is about having the cognition to 
invest.  This is the whole thing about them.  Every line has its thing that it has to be 
smart about.  The 4 has to be smart about who it pays attention to.  This is the key 
to being a 4.  If you‟re a 4 and you pay attention to the wrong people, you make an 
investment over time and you end up getting no return and you end up with a loss.  
I know it sounds odd to measure it in that way, but that's what 4s are all about.  It‟s 
what they have to be about, quid pro quo.  And yet they need to have the cognitive 
skills to recognize where that investment has to go. 
 
You have to see something about the nature of the 4.  The 4 is here to be able to 
see.  If you look at them wave-wise you see that the benefactor is part of what their 
energy is about.  They‟re here to be able to grasp where there is a need for an 
investment in the other.  It is never free of whatever the intended motivation is 
going to be, because after all everything that a 4 does is for its own possibility.  Now, 
I don't mean to say that in a mean sense, because I don‟t.  That is, it is correct for 
them.  They are in fact very beneficial, generally speaking to others, more often 
beneficial for others than they are for themselves. 
 
It‟s one of the deep dilemmas of the not-self 4 doing all this networking and they 
end up being cut out and everybody else thrives.  This is the not-self.  It happens to 
4s all the time.  And of course, it give them a very bad feeling whatever that may be, 
depending on their type—the anger, the frustration, the bitterness, the disappointed, 
you name it, that's going to be there.  And it's all about investment.   
 
One of the dilemmas of this is the confusion that is there.  There is this 
brotherhood/sisterhood theme of the 4.  The 4 has a problem with sex.  It always 
has this kind of thing with sex.  It has to be very, very particular because it is built 
out of certain demands within the relationship before the sexuality is something that 
really is interesting.  And at the same time there has to be a certain coldness, 
coolness to the way in which the 4 needs to assess the other because they play a 
role.

The 4 is the Great Externalizer  
After all, the 4 is the great externalizer.  Nobody does a better job.  The difference 
between the 4 and the 5 is that the 4 tells the gossip and it goes around the world 
and the 5 tells the truth and nobody's listening.  This is so often the story.  And I 
don't mean to say that they just share gossip, and by the way, gossip is healthy, it is 
the way in which communities stay informed.  But it is something to grasp about 
them.  That is, they are very, very influential beings.  And yet, at the same time they 
can be very dysfunctional.  Dysfunctional in what they influence, because if they‟re 
not able to discern where the investment goes, they end up creating networks that 
can be negatives, negatives for others, whatever; all the “this and that” that goes on 
and on about all of it. 
 
If you‟re going to be able to live out the mythology of a line, your motivation, your 
determination relative to that line, whether it is this side or that side, it really has to 
be correct because it's so deeply tied to it.  And when you're dealing with the 4, 
more than anything else because of the nature of the 4th Color—if you‟re somebody 
that is carrying the 4th Color in their design, one of those things that is very, very 
important is the obvious of Strategy and Authority.  But it's particularly important to 
experiment with PHS.  It is one of those things that is very, very healing for 
discernment.  After all, PHS is there to enhance cognition, aside from all of the things 
it can do.   
 
And this is particularly a recommendation relative to the enhanced cognition 
program, because one of the things about the 4 is that because of their influence and 
because they are connected in that investment in the network, that this is not 
something that they can just pull out of.  This is one of the dilemmas of the 4s.  This 
is why wherever you look at 4th lines you're always going to see underneath the 
surface, sometimes right on top, you're going to see themes of exhaustion and 
fatigue and burnout, all those lines that are associated with the 4, the abdicator, the 
giving up, the “this,” the “that.”  And of course, these are the themes of failed 
investment.   
 
One thing that is very hard for me always to grasp about how difficult it is to be a 4 
is how you're not really anything, you're not this, you‟re not that, you‟re not really 
lower trigram, you‟re really not.  And you‟re not left angle.  So, in a sense you‟re not 
really that upper force.  You‟re something else.  In profile you sort of get a taste of it 
through juxtaposition.  But it really is, in that sense, something else.  It very much 
has its own kind of rules in a way.  And one of the great dilemmas that is there is 
that the difference in the life of a 4 is who is in their life.  And much more as an 
accent than just about anybody else you‟re going to look at as a line configuration, 
because everything is dependent on it.  And everything is dependent on the long-
term investment in it, which means you've got to be really on.  You can't afford to 
make those mistakes.

The 4/6 Profile 
You get to see that the most in 4/6s, and I say that because they go through the so-
called 4/3 phase in the first Saturn cycle where there are really mistakes that are 
made in their relationships, in the groups that they become involved with, and the 
tendency to carry those mistakes over into the roof stage of their process with trying 
to deal with it in a different way and yet at the same time still investing the energy 
in those beings over huge extended periods of time.  
 
I know 4s who invest in people for decades in the assumption that they're actually 
getting something on the return.  And it tends to be just conditioning and folly.  It's 
quite something to be aware and it‟s quite something to be aware as a 4th line being.  
The Personality is something else.  When you're dealing with the 4/1, when you‟re 
dealing juxtaposition, than when you‟re dealing with a 4/6, the 4/6 is a very unusual 
configuration.  Like the 1/3, this configuration in which you‟ve got this doubling up so 
in the 4/6 you have these two upper trigrams.   
 
My nickname for the 4/6, the voyeur, the watcher on the edge is really what they are 
all about and yet at the same time this ability to be able to integrate, this ability to 
be able to influence, this ability to be able to externalize and the ability to get the 
advantages that are there for it, that there will be the lover that they go to leaving a 
lover, the job they go to leaving a job.  The place they go to and then they sell their 
place, the old one, or they do it when they have a buyer. 
 
This is magic for them.  This is the ultimate reward of being an opportunist.  The 
ultimate reward of being an opportunist is to be able to take advantage of 
opportunity when it arises.  Not to hope for it, not to need it, because you've got 
your solid base.  The partners that are surprised that all of a sudden the partner that 
they thought they could trust, their friend, suddenly has gone off on an affair with 
somebody.  This is out of the security of the 4.   
 
The Need for Security   
Look at those 4s around you; don‟t be so certain about them.  You can't be so 
certain about them.  As a matter of fact, the more secure they are, the better the 
base is, their job, their lover, their family, their “this,” their “that,” that‟s when all of 
those things are possible for them.  That‟s only then when there are really 
opportunities for them.  That's when it's exciting, that's what it's rewarding.  It‟s a 
funny thing, but that‟s who they are.  That‟s what that investment is all about.  And 
what maintains their security in their base is that by investing properly they get the 
necessary return, that is, the material returns to be able to maintain whatever the 
lifestyle happens to be that they are securing.  They can‟t be without it.

A black magician, you take a 4, you know somebody who is a 4 and you‟re a black 
magician, you destroy them.  It‟s not hard.  You shatter their foundation.  You find 
out what they're leaning on and you just crush it, because that is what a 4 is, it is 
leaning on the 1.  It‟s taking for granted that the foundation is there and the security 
is there so it doesn‟t have to worry about it.  So it doesn't have to worry about 
looking for another flat because it's secure in its flat.  It takes it for granted. 
 
It can be deeply surprised that all of a sudden it is out of a job and its environment 
is at risk.  That‟s when they‟re at their worst.  That‟s when they‟re deeply panicked.  
That‟s when they desperately try to call their network for the opportunity that hasn't 
come yet that probably isn't going to come because they didn't build a network that 
was truly going to be supportive of them. 
 
They‟re relying on something.  Now, if you‟re not correct in this life and you‟re not 
operating correctly as an opportunist, you're relying on something that can easily be 
pulled out from under you.  And it's painful.  It‟s more extreme in the 4/1.  The 4/6 
because it goes through a 3rd line phase is used to things blowing up.  But a 4/1, to 
lose its foundation, to lose what it relies on, this is devastating; the oak tree that 
just cracks under it.   
 
Again, it goes back to cognition.  It goes back to that architecture that‟s lying there 
underneath, that architecture that whispers to the opportunists „look inward,‟  don't 
be in a hurry.  Take your time.  Meditate, let it move by.  These are the biggest 
decisions you make in your life.  If you are a 4, anyone at any level of your life that 
you embrace at any level, they‟re in your network, so be careful who you embrace.  
You have to be correct.   
 
Strangers are not for the Opportunist  
You always know that an opportunist has gone over the edge when they‟re 
embracing strangers.  They‟re desperate and their network is falling apart.  If you‟re 
an opportunist, strangers are always going to be the most dangerous thing for you.  
They‟re not for you.  Anybody that's new in your life has to come with a 
recommendation, with an introduction.  To be a 4 and to truly be healthy you have 
to be very disciplined about your relationships.  And it's not easy.  There is this 
natural comraderie that is in the 4th line.  And given the construct of people‟s 
designs, some of whom are quite social, it gets very easily confused.   
 
In a sense, the 3-4 are very much about the material plane.  The 3 is about the 
material itself.  The 4 is about the resources of the material plane, the human 
resources and the way they work.  One of the things about the opportunist is that 
they need to look at those beings in their life with a material eye.  Given our various 
cultures and the way in which people consider these things, that wouldn‟t be 
considered very nice or romantic or politically correct, but this is a heretical 
knowledge, after all, it‟s just the truth of it.  Are these people going to be good for 
me; and that often is something that is deeply material.  Are they reliable?  Can I 
count on them?

Because remember, it's not just simply selfish, please understand that.  I don‟t want 
to give that impression.  The 4 at the same time is doing something that is essential.  
They are externalizing that secure platform, whatever that secure platform happens 
to be.  They're the ones that are influencing others.  Those that are in their network 
appreciate that at some level or another, whether they appreciate it to the point that 
it‟s beneficial ultimately to the opportunist is another story, but it's not like they are 
taking and not giving.   
 
As a matter of fact, they are the foundation of transpersonal relationships.  
Everything about the nature of meeting the other in terms of the way the script is 
written begins at the line level in the 4th lines.  If you want to see all of the social 
paraphernalia of human interaction read all 64 fourth lines and you will see the social 
dynamic of the transpersonal interaction and the way to bring about influence, those 
64 different potential externalizations or influences that there in those 4th lines. 
 
The 4 as a Personality  
When I look at the 4s as a Personality, it is generally much more dysfunctional than 
4 as a Design, because the 4 as a Personality brings all of those issues into the not-
self mind.  And with the not-self mind comes all the distortion.  And all of that 
distortion that's going to be rooted in the fundamentals of that person's design, 
whether they‟re a single or a split or a triple split, what are going to be the 
conditioning factors, what is the density of the not-self, how is the mind framing 
these things, then this whole business about who is the right person become a mess. 
 
Imagine that kind of a situation that it's up to the mind to decide who the 4 is going 
to invest their energy in; you know right away this is going to be a problem.  And it‟s 
going to be a major problem.  Oh, the thing about cognition.  This is something that 
I try to stress so much, how important it is and how difficult it is to bring that 
cognition to the surface when you‟re dealing with the Personality.  When you enter 
into Strategy and Authority you begin the process of bringing the physical cognition, 
the vehicle‟s cognition to a point in which it is finally functioning and guiding the way 
in which the decision making process is going on for the vehicle.  So if you are 
somebody that is a 2/4 or a 1/4, the moment that you‟re entering into Strategy and 
Authority, you're already able to discern very easily who is correct for you, though it 
may be uncomfortable for your mind in the sense that it‟s going to come directly out 
of the vehicle, out of the vehicle‟s response or whatever the particular Strategy and 
Authority happens to be.   
 
But if it‟s a Personality phenomenon it‟s something very different.  That is, either in 
the 4/1 or the 4/6 there are certain obvious changes that take place in terms of the 
awareness because of the involvement in Strategy and Authority, but the mind is the 
last thing to be correct.  And the mind is always subject to transference.  And of 
course, transference is what is going to knock away the cognitive potential of the 
mind being able to discern.

Problems with Communication  
Now, as long as the person is actually making decisions according to their Strategy 
and Authority, it isn‟t so awful that the mind is not seeing properly, it just leads to 
great deal of distortion in the way in which they express themselves because they're 
not seeing correctly and they‟re not being able to express themselves correctly which 
means that they're going to have problems not so much within their vehicle in 
selection, they're going to have problems communicating.  In other words, they're 
going to have their difficulties as a Personality in being able to externalize.  There is 
going to be resistance to their externalization because it's simply not going to 
function well. 
 
Again, without the cognition and the proper motivation because they go hand-in-
hand it's going to be very, very difficult for that Personality opportunist to be able to 
externalize their outer authority.  Everything about the challenge of what it is to be 
correct, it is much easier to begin this process with the body and is always a 
dilemma when you try to theorize about what that means in relationship to the 
Personality and to the mind because it is a very difficult process to be able to get 
that to operate correctly. 
 
First of all, it begins in the deep entrenchment in the physical processes, because 
this is where everything is.  My work as a teacher is that I am here to teach form 
principle in order to be able to liberate passenger consciousness.  The only way that 
you can liberate passenger consciousness is through the form.  This is our limitation.  
Even though we have the benefits of an upgraded vehicle, the nine-centered vehicle, 
and the mapping, the fact is that it is still an enormous challenge for you and me, for 
those that were born to be conditioned, those of us who have begun a deconditioning 
process to really fulfill the possibility, the full potential that is there.  And yet, it is 
there and the mechanism is there.   
 
The Journey Has to Begin with the Vehicle  
However, the journey has to begin with the vehicle.  This is the only solution.  We 
are not designed as a nine-centered being to be focused on mental concerns over 
our survival or mental domination in terms of the way in which we orient ourselves in 
this life.  We‟re meant to do that through the vehicle itself so that the mind can be 
liberated to the role of observer.  And of course, what that means is not just simply 
Strategy and Authority because Strategy and Authority stops the conditioning 
process, begins the deconditioning process and begins to align you to what is correct 
for you, but at a basic level that is a seven-year cellular process just to go through 
the deconditioning. 
 
One of the things that's important is that when you enter into your Strategy and 
Authority, what is actually going on is that for the first time you begin to gain access

to what is your cognitive ability that is there within your form.  That cognitive 
potential in your form is what is in fact beginning to guide your decision making 
process.  In other words, you're physically making decisions that are more and more 
aware relative to your potential differentiation.  Now, obviously one of the things that 
is explicit in the way in which I've laid out the themes of transformation is that once 
you are involved in the catalyzing experiment of Strategy and Authority, that the 
first transformation that is there, the one that will lay the foundation for all the 
others, is dietary.   
 
Social Consequences with Each Step  
Again, I want to be very clear, though I don‟t want to get into a thing about it 
because I've been doing this quite often now, is that I want to stress that every step 
you take in this process is an alienating and individualizing step.  In other words, like 
the subject of my lecture this week, neo-narcissism, where neo-narcissism is 
something that is considered a disease, an illness, a sickness, as you enter into your 
Human Design process of beginning to discover and live your own authority you are 
in fact challenging all kinds of social norms which create their own pressure.  So, it is 
not just simply the process in Human Design of being able to be aware of what the 
steps are and to take them, is that we live in the world and obviously there are social 
consequences to each of the steps.   
 
There has never been knowledge like this.  There's never been knowledge that 
promoted unique individual authority.  By its very nature it is a challenge to 
everything that is out there at every level of knowledge.  So, it is quite something to 
live this.  It‟s one thing to grasp it and understand its possibilities; it‟s another thing 
to truly live it.  Dietary regimen on the surface seems like that is a no-brainer and it 
is an incredible thing, in fact.  To be able to understand that each and every one of 
us has a unique dietary regimen that is there for us to enhance our potential to be 
able to enhance what is our sensory potential, our cognitive potential, the way in 
which the brain system operates, the way in which the chemistry of the brain 
operates in terms of the way in which it informs the vehicle, the way in which the 
vehicle itself is maintained.  This is something that is really extraordinary. 
 
Food is the Most Homogenizing Agent  
For me, the most profound homogenizing agent is food.  It's food.  It is how the 
program prepares every newborn for the homogenized world.  We give them what is 
incorrect.  In other words, we immediately homogenize them with food.  And it is 
obvious to me that one of the most important ways in which one can truly begin 
transformation is one's approach to diet, that it is an essential ingredient and 
specifically and absolutely important for those that will carry the 1st, the 2nd or the 
3rd Colors in terms of determination, because these are very specific conditions.  And 
these are older dietary models, and they demand, they really demand dietary

adherence in order for there to be a real jump in the qualitative level of the 
perception. 
 
Again, something to really grasp about it is that it's the form that determines our 
potential; nothing else.  It‟s just the form.  So, the efficiency of the form, the 
correctness of the form, all of this sets the foundation.  The fact is that whatever the 
possibility of your Personality Crystal to filter the consciousness field is limited by the 
brain, the physical brain, the way the physical brain works, how healthy the physical 
brain is, all kinds of things that simply have to do with the form principle itself.   
 
One of the things to grasp about this transformation in the efficiency of the vehicle 
through proper dietary regimen is that what this is doing in fact is that it is 
enhancing the potential of the brain system itself and the by-product of that is that 
you've got better hardware for the Personality software.  In other words, you open 
up a greater potential of the Personality in terms of what it can rely on as the 
physical capacities that are inherent in it.  And it‟s not a miracle about improvement, 
is a miracle related to cleaning.  As I‟ve taught students of this we all suffered neural 
shut down at about 3 to 3 1/2 years of age when in fact it is a seven-year process.  
We‟re not going to get any of that back.  And even the 3 1/2 years of neural 
development that we went through were deeply homogenized from the moment we 
came into the world. 
 
The fact is that what dietary regimen is doing is that it is beginning to realign the 
way in which the system is nourished with the focus being on those specific areas 
within the biological system that of those areas that are the keys to the 
differentiation of the being.  This is real efficiency.  That is, it is efficiency in which 
the whole nutritive process is something that is geared to deep, deep specifics as far 
away as you can get from generalization.  And if you really grasp what Human 
Design is about you can see that this first transformation through PHS is that this is 
the first thing that says to you clearly from the point of view of the science  that we 
are designed for differentiation because here is the dietary regimen that literally sets 
the platform for the difference. 
 
Something that is remarkable to understand is that there really is a unique process 
for each of us and a unique process that is there to bring out that unique authority.  
It starts in the body.  If the body is not nourished or enhanced, for those areas that 
are going to be the keys to the differentiation there is no way that the Personality is 
going to be able to have the advantages.  It can‟t; and thus, the limitation of the 
Personality.   
 
It Takes 50 Years before the Expression of Outer Authority  
I‟ve been watching people in Human Design now for 21 years.  The correct vehicle is 
not the same as a transformed human being.  It‟s not.  It‟s a journey.  Even in 
understanding the journey in terms of what would be expected of somebody who is 
raised ideally in the perfect environment—aware parents, raised according to type 
and strategy, nourished correctly according to their PHS—even in that idealized

situation it‟s still 50 years before the expression of outer authority.  And that's 50 
years of being correct. 
 
It is something to understand that we are a very unique generation, we are the 
pioneer generation, and we are the generation that is deconditioned.  It‟s sort of like 
those vampire movies where you have the real vampires and you have the ones that 
were made vampires; pardon my sense of humor, but anyway, it really is sort of like 
that.   
 
The 4th Line and Health  
There‟s something that needs to be said about the 4th line and needs to be said in 
the context of health.  Clearly Strategy and Authority and PHS set a foundation for a 
very healthy vehicle and lay the foundation for the potential of a healthy life because 
a healthy life isn‟t in the PHS, a healthy life is actually in the Design Nodes.  That is, 
what's called the Design external.  That‟s where the healthy life is.  That‟s where the 
life is actually laid out, that‟s where the process is laid out for the being.  It's only 
then that you open up the possibility of being able to really see.  It‟s only out of that 
seeing that the potential of true conceptualization as a differentiated consciousness 
can be expressed ultimately then as an outer authority. 
 
But I want to get to this issue of health and how important it is to move 4th line 
beings to physical correctness and through the first stages of transformation as 
quickly as is correct because the 4s are carriers.  You're in a room with three or four 
people and the 4 walks into the room incubating some kind of a common cold or 
whatever, everybody is going to get it.  This is the thing about being an influence.  
An influence works in many ways, but physical influence is something.   
 
Now again, in saying that, there are always those people that hear statements like 
that and turn it into a negative.  It is just one of the many ways in which the 4 
externalizes information.  The homogenized 4 world is helpless in the fact that they 
are externalizing bad health.  They externalize colds, flus, all of those things that can 
be externalized that are contagious in that sense.  The fact is though, that if 4s are 
correct in terms of their physical being and if they're aligned correctly to where they 
should be in this life in terms of their real direction in this life, they begin to 
externalize well-being.  That's something that's very interesting.  In other words, 
they begin to have exactly the opposite effect in terms of being able to externalize 
and influence others to being healthy.   
 
So, I think it‟s very important in that way in looking at 4s, particularly when you're 
dealing with 4 bodies, because the quickest way to influence them is to really make 
sure that if they‟re ready and you can take them through these stages how 
important it is not simply for them, but the fact that they are the foundation of 
transpersonal connection and that healthy 4s and healthy lifestyle are going to be 
disproportionately important in terms of the well-being of the community around 
them.

Seeing Differently  
It‟s something to think about because when you're looking at a transpersonal line 
you have to recognize that it's not simply about the being at all.  It is about the 
transpersonal consequences of what it means for this line to meet the other and 
what the consequences are for the other in terms of the conditioning that they 
receive.  Again, I'm very good at making every line more important than anything 
else, so don‟t take this out of context, but the responsibility to be aware is my goal 
in what I do.  Human Design nurtures awareness and it does so in a very individual 
way, which is only correct.  As you begin to follow your Strategy and Authority you 
begin to see differently.  It is a natural phenomenon because your mind is less 
connected to its traditional role, its traditional dysfunctional role. 
 
You also begin to understand other things, why people are the way they are, why 
they do the things they do, and so forth and so on.  You begin to have a sense of the 
program and the fact that there is a conditioning field and all of these things begin to 
change the way in which you look at things.  Each and every one of us according to 
our design have very, very specific things about the way we are designed to connect 
to the other and the importance of that connection.  I know that.  I am a left angle, 
I‟m a 5/1 and I‟m well aware of the transpersonal obligations that exist in living out 
what it is to be a universalizing line, and what that means and all the stuff that goes 
with it.  And it‟s true for every 5th line regardless of how it‟s expressed, and we‟ll see 
that next week.   
 
The 4’s Power is in their Investment in their Network  
But here looking at 4s understanding they are the influence that‟s all around us.  The 
opportunist influences their friends and their acquaintances.  The heretic is going to 
influence strangers.  It can‟t influence its neighbor, but it can influence a stranger.  
The opportunist can't influence a stranger, but it can deeply influence its neighbor.  
It‟s what makes them different.  And I think it's part of what all 4s need to 
understand about their power, is their power is in those tight circles of their 
investment and who are these beings and did they come into their process correctly.   
 
This is what the awareness is about, because if you invest directly as a 4th line being, 
this is when you get all the delights of whatever your signature happens to be, 
because if you're Manifestor opportunist what you're after is that ultimate peace.  
You get a certain amount of peace as your base and then there is the next level of it, 
if you know what I mean.  It‟s the same thing with the satisfaction and so forth and 
so on.  It's something that's there about them.  This is their ultimate delight and it‟s 
all a by-product of that investment in the beings.   
 
The other thing is when they are at their best like the 4 that is correct and healthy, 
they bring that health and well-being to the other and they influence the other and 
whether that is through what they say to them, what their aura does to them, 
whatever the case may be, the positive influence is going to be there.  In that sense 
the way in which the basic bonds of community are established, the links between

the collective, the tribe and the individual, that all this linkage can be found through 
the 4.  It is only the opportunist that can bring a tribal, an individual and a collective 
person together into their network.  This is what they‟re good at.  They‟re good at 
creating a unique pool around them.  Of course, they‟re designed to be able to do 
that in the perfected way so that they get what are the maximum rewards in that.   
 
The Basic Rules of Being an Opportunist  
Don‟t leave a lover until you have another lover.  Don‟t leave a job until you have 
another job.  Don‟t leave your flat until you have another flat.  These are the basic 
rules of what it is to be an opportunist.  What‟s so interesting about it is that there is 
a disproportionate punishment for the opportunist that is incorrect.  I normally would 
never point a finger like that, because it creates a false impression, but in fact, if you 
look at those 4th lines you will see.  These themes of the burnout, the fatigue and 
exhaustion, these themes are there.   
 
And it's so easy for them to really crash, to lose that foundation, that security that is 
there for them.  It‟s why people, and their ability to discern who is correct, is one of 
the most important things about Strategy and Authority.  It‟s not simply that through 
that you make decisions in your life, but those decisions that you make in your life 
include the most important decisions you make, and most of those most important 
decisions you make are about people.  We‟re not here to be alone.  We are driven by 
the genetic imperative.  Even when we are correctly we resonate to others because 
it‟s our nature.   
 
The fulfillment of our Personality consciousnesses is our ability to communicate outer 
authority and not in a vacuum, but to others.  We are by our very nature gregarious.  
We are social beings, we are a social species.  And of course this is where the life is 
determined and not just for the 4, obviously, but for all of us.  It‟s one of the most 
important things to understand about decision making.  And it‟s not about making a 
decision to your Strategy and Authority when it comes to a job opportunity or 
something and using your mind and your not-self to decide whether you want to 
have this person or that person in your life; boy is that a disaster.   
 
The Vehicle Lives the Life  
It's the last, well, I wouldn‟t say the last, but it's perhaps the deepest vanity, that it's 
actually your mind that can decide that you like somebody or not, or love somebody 
or not.  For me, it's one of those great pieces of black humor.  It's your vehicle that 
lives the life.  It‟s the vehicle that bonds.  It's the vehicle that mates.  It‟s the 
vehicle.  And it‟s the vehicle that has to decide.  It‟s not for the Personality to decide.  
You can see the vanity creep in—me, me—you know.  How do I know what my 
Sacral is going to like?  How do I know if I‟m going to like it?  Well, you don‟t.  It is 
part of the great discovery, isn‟t it, to find out who you are, who belongs in your life 
and who doesn‟t.  These are decisions that are of enormous importance.

I remember my not-self rather well and all my decisions about people were mental.  
I remember it so clearly, concepts about what this person or that person was, 5/1 
with the not-self openness dilemma.  I was very good at it, by the way, and made a 
real mess of things.  The vehicle; oh, it‟s remarkable what my Spleen tells me.  It 
has changed my whole process, because the Spleen, my authority, is so 
spontaneous.  I never know how long I can like somebody or not.  I say that 
humorously, but it‟s true, because my Spleen only goes “yes” or “no” in the moment.  
And I've learned to see that that's all that my life is about, that‟s how I discern from 
one moment to the next.   
 
We‟re all given this beautiful gift of being able to surrender to the vehicle making our 
lives so much more fulfilling.  It‟s your vehicle that brings you to signature.  It‟s not 
your mind, it‟s your body.  When everything is right for your body, your Personality 
just has to go along with most of it.  It‟s like, yeah, this is ok, I like this, because 
that‟s the way it works.  It‟s the magic in Strategy and Authority.  It really is.  The 
deeper and deeper and deeper that you understand it‟s the body's life.  So let the 
body live its life, let the body have its associates, its friends.  Let it select the auras it 
needs for its process, because what you will see observing that sitting back in the 
passenger seat, is that you‟re getting yourself your life and it‟s entertaining, to see it 
unfold.   
 
Humans are Unique and Special  
It‟s so hard for human beings to grasp that they are unique and special.  It‟s difficult.  
And yet, this is where it all is, is this understanding how incredible it is to be able to 
express what is your unique potential; yours, period.  And the thing that gets in the 
way of that over and over and over again are those beings that there in your life that 
you indulge, that you empathize with, those beings that condition you negatively day 
in and day out, those beings that pull you this way and that way, those beings that 
you allow into your process, the 4s that allows somebody into the network that 
doesn't belong there.  It‟s like bringing a cancer into a cell.  Slowly but surely it eats 
it away.   
 
Decision making is everything.  If you want to live the magic you have to live it 
through the body completely.  Again, it‟s my thing about embracing this knowledge 
as radically as is possible for you, but the whole business of enhancing the possibility 
of cognition on Personality side, of enhancing awareness on the Personality side, you 
have to be deeply disciplined in your respect for the demand of the body before you 
can really exalt that process, because even in deep awareness that is possible just 
through this whole experience, that you're doing it within the limitation of a brain 
that has more possibilities, greater possibilities beyond even what you think is your 
space, your place.

Lecture Five 
The 5th Line: The Heretic  
 
 
Welcome to all of you.  We get to an 
interesting place in our line journey.  It‟s the 
thing about the hexagram.  In so many ways, 
the hexagram is really the 1 to the 5.  The 6 is 
different.  It‟s very different.  Everything about 
the 1 to the 5 is deeply ingrained in the nature 
of the hexagram itself; in other words, varying 
expressions of the nature of the hexagram.  In 
so many ways the first three lines are 
research, and the 4 and the 5 are really about 
letting others know what this hexagram stands 
for as an influence and what it stands for in 
the 5th line sense, as a universalizing force. 
 
A Universalizing Expression  
In a sense, the 5th line is the marketing agent of the hexagram.  And the 5th line has 
a history of being different and special and given special consideration.  After I had 
my experience, I began to familiarize myself with the I‟Ching.  It was interesting to 
note that the 5th lines are always exalted.  They always carry with them a special 
quality.  Basically what that quality is is that it's the responsibility, or the burden of 
the 5th line to be the universalizing expression of whatever that hexagram happens 
to be.  It means that the 5th line carries with it a certain fundamental power, and it is 
a fundamental power that can be, as everything is in this binary of ours, it‟s a two-
way street.   
 
The Power of Seduction  
It is a power of seduction.  And it is this power of seduction that is the way in which 
every hexagram—because if you look at every hexagram and their 5th lines, you will 
see they all have a certain specialness to them—the Savior, the Therapist, the 
Saint—there are all kinds of them, these 5th lines that all say this is something 
different.  And of course, it isn't, in a sense.  It is the projection that it gets, and 
we'll get into the projection of this.

Seduction is an amazing thing.  In Human Design we spend a great deal of time 
understanding the nature of conditioning.  The most important knowledge for us to 
have is to understand the nature of conditioning and free ourselves from the power 
of conditioning.  And yet, it is one of those wonderful ironies, and I do love the 
ironies of the biverse.  It is one of those lovely ironies that the conditioning one so 
deeply needs to grasp and understand and counter is also the very source of one's 
deepest potential in terms of wisdom in this life. 
 
The thing that is interesting about human beings is that we are mostly receptors.  If 
you look at somebody's design, other than rare situations, in most people‟s designs 
they have a lot of hanging gates and they have an enormous amount of openness.  
And all of that openness, every single aspect of that openness, is a calling card.  It is 
a receptor that literally is waiting, longing, whatever language you want to use to 
describe it, waiting for something happen, waiting to be conditioned.  And in 
essence, if we look at the nature of the way in which the bio-form is designed, 
everything about the transformation of the bio-form is the result of conditioning or 
deconditioning.   
 
Conditioner or Deconditioner  
I, for example, represent deconditioning.  This is the classic 5.  You‟re either going to 
be a conditioner or you‟re going to be a deconditioner.  That‟s the heresy, to 
condition somebody to a heretical whatever, or to decondition them as a heresy of 
itself taking them away from something.  This is the seduction that‟s inherent in 
here, it‟s the seduction to be conditioned or not, or to be condition or deconditioned.  
Heresy, in that sense, is always both attractive and dangerous. 
 
It‟s interesting in our journey that we have been taking, I have been giving you 
glimpses of infrastructure themes in the number continuities to give you a sense of 
the richness that lies in the foundation of any of these themes, any of these line 
themes, line themes that are just scripts that are built on the infrastructure below, 
after all.  These scripts are very much influenced by their continuity, though 
obviously, there are so many ways in which the script can be played out and 
characterized. 
 
Tonal Architecture 
But, if you go back deep; that is, if you go to the architecture that lies underneath, 
whenever you‟re dealing with tonal architecture and the nine-centered being, there is 
something extraordinary about the 4th, 5th and 6th Tones.  That is, they represent a 
transformation in the way in which consciousness is going to operate, a 
consciousness that is going to be rooted, at least within the Personality context that 
we can understand it as a receptive consciousness, a consciousness that is much 
more sophisticated in the way in which it takes in information as a whole rather than

being so oriented to being focused on specific bits of information, which is our 
historical tradition.   
 
The 5th Tone 
So, the moment you're dealing with something like the 5th Tone, as an example, 
you're actually dealing with something that is only beginning to open up the 
possibility of its realization.  As I mentioned to you earlier, when we‟re looking at 
Tones, we‟re looking actually at three groupings that operate in binaries.  And so the 
final binary, the 5 and the 6, this final binary is known as the Solar Plexus binary.  
And it is, in a sense, the least understood for obvious reasons in that we are in a 
deep mutative phase.  But it also carries with it a promise of a different kind of 
sensitivity. 
 
Autism and Prostate Cancer  
I have to digress to my share with you some of my interest in this.  I‟ve had a long-
term fascination with autism and have been pointing to the rise of autism and 
prostate cancer as the by-product of the evolutionary program—mutations arriving 
too soon.  That is, those beings who are afflicted with prostate cancer, the males 
who are afflicted with prostate cancer are the males that post-2027 would be able to 
fertilize a rave.  And the autistic children are just simply, and unfortunately, but then 
again, evolution works this way, they came at the wrong time, because the program 
isn‟t in place.   
 
Last week Harvard University released an extraordinary study on the genetics of 
autism and a number of statements that arose out of that are truly fascinating.  One 
is that all autism causes are different, are unique, and are differentiated which is 
something that's rather interesting.  What they have also discovered is that all of the 
genetic markers they have discovered associated with autism, basically what these 
particular genes do is they make it difficult for experience to be transformed.  In 
other words, they make it difficult for experience to be integrated.  It has to do with 
the way in which neurons fire and the way in which the synapses operate. 
 
The thing about the autistic child is that an ordinary capacity in the brain to be able 
to transform experience into memory, into transformed behavior, is something that 
is turned off in the autistic child.  Now, what‟s curious about this is, in understanding 
the nature of the rave or the coming of the rave, and some of you in this class, many 
of you have had enough background in is, the thing that's interesting about the rave 
is that they are they are going to be the species that is going to be able to operate 
out of Solar Plexus awareness.  Now, modern Solar Plexus investigation in the 
scientific field is full of just absolutely astounding discoveries.  The Solar Plexus, for 
example, has more neural capacity than the brain itself.

So we're dealing with a phenomenal place in which experience is being translated 
differently.  It is Solar Plexus neural activity that's going to be translating experience 
for the coming rave.  And in these autistic children there are these genes that 
naturally turn this off.  They naturally turn it off.  And of course, this is the way it‟s 
supposed to be, except there's nothing to take its place yet.  There is no neural 
activity that is ready to replace that.  This is the thing that is so fascinating and to 
see it now.   
 
Everything I've been teaching for nearly 21 years about this subject is now being 
realized in genetics.  It‟s really an incredible thing, and just to be able to understand 
this.  The reason I bring this up is that this is what we're dealing with when we're 
dealing with the underlying thematic that is there as a foundation of the way in 
which the heretic ultimately is going to be affected.  And of course, what is there is 
something very, very unusual, because it is a tactile quality that is extraordinary.  
That is, it is capable of taking in a tremendous amount of information. 
 
One of the interesting things about seduction as a 5th line theme, that deep down in 
its rooting in the modern nine-centered being since 1781, what‟s really lying down 
there underneath is this touch, the common touch.  Remember that it is the 5th line 
that has to be able to seduce strangers; strangers, not familiars, but strangers.  
They have a touch.  They‟re the ones that others want to touch, to get close to.  It‟s 
there.  It is a quality that is there that, more and more, will come to the surface as 
more and more human beings get to a point where truly they can operate correctly.   
 
The Design and Personality 5th Color 
What is also interesting here is to think about the rootings of the 5th line in terms of 
the way in which Color operates in the Design and the Personality Color.  On the 
Design side, when we‟re talking about determination, the thing that is so interesting 
about the 5 is that it is deeply, deeply sensitive to acoustics—sound.  So, it is 
something to see very clearly that seduction is something that carries with it a 
frequency quality, a very important frequency quality.  The seduction is going to be 
in the frequency or not.   
 
Remember that heretic can be burned at the stake.  The seduction, if it falls apart, if 
the seduction is not substantiated, then the heretic burns at the stake.  It‟s so 
interesting that the heretic has this, like me with my voice, and you know that about 
my voice, this is this frequency thing.  This is the seductive quality that is there in 
the 5th line.  It‟s in its roots.  And of course, at the same time that seduction can be 
attractive and stimulating, it can also really upset people.  
 
So, on one side you have a determination that says these beings have built into their 
seduction a unique frequency.  It‟s the frequency that universalizes.  And on the 
other side, I love it when people find out that they're a 5th Color Personality and they 
gulp.  Human Design is nothing but keynotes.  There are all kinds of keynotes.  And 
there are some that one can understand people being disturbed by, I guess.  Words 
have value in the homogenized world.

Color 5 Motivation: Guilt 
But the 5th Color of guilt, people don't even like to say the word.  The 5 motivation—
conditioner or conditioned—think about the 5th line, think about everything that you 
understand about conditioning in the Human Design context.  Everything about 
conditioning, the only line that resonates to conditioning, the only line that is a 
conditioning force is a 5.  The universalizing agent is the agent that needs to put out 
the message.  It needs to put that message out.  And everything about life is 
conditioning or deconditioning, because everything in the program is about 
conditioning and everything in our design is about conditioning, everything. 
 
Look at me.  I‟m an archetypal 5th line Personality.  So what do I do?  I condition you 
to decondition, don‟t I?  And if I really worked at it, I could make you feel guilty as 
hell that you're not doing it.  What‟s the matter with you?  Is this too difficult?—that 
whole trip.  I don‟t play that card, but I know it so well.  This is the way that it 
works.  You can‟t universalize without conditioning.  You can‟t.  And everybody is 
ready to be conditioned.  Look at that.  It‟s how things change.  Every hexagram is 
ready to be conditioned.  Every hexagram is ready to be the conditioner. 
 
Positive Expectation  
So, the heretic has a problem.  It begins with the unconscious heretics, the 2/5s and 
the 3/5s.  If I have profile empathy being a 5/1, I often wonder how 3/5s deal with 
it.  I'm a very, very conscious being, the way my design is set up in that sense, I'm 
right there in the present.  I'm very aware of what it is to be a Personality 5 and I 
know all the stuff that comes with it.  And I always think about those 2/5s and 3/5s 
and they don't know that, because there's enormous pressure that comes with this.  
And the pressure that comes with this is the horror of positive expectation.  No other 
line gets this. 
 
Positive expectation—I want you to think about that.  So, you‟re a 5/1 and you come 
out of the womb and your mother looks at you and says, oh my God, he‟s back on 
Earth, until you fart or spit or do something and then you immediately fall from 
grace.  Think about what it is to be a 3/5.  A 3/5 is a major league screw-up.  The 
not-self 3/5 is—you want to read all of their biographies, you just do because they‟re 
going to be entertaining.   
 
Because if you're a not-self 3/5, you're going to make mistakes and you're going to 
make mistakes while people were expecting you not to.  Somebody walks up to a 
3/5 and their first assumption is here‟s the one, the great neo-line, here‟s the one.  
Oh, my heart goes out to 3/5s in that situation and they don't know any better—no 
Inner Authority, no protection.  And there‟s that person with all that expectation and 
all that “Oh, you‟re going to be so good at this,” and they blow it because they‟re 
going to blow it.

And then, if you‟re a 5 and you don‟t fulfill the expectation of the other, you are 
worthless.  Not only are you worthless, but you cheated them, you lied to them, you 
fooled them.  Oh, are they ever going to punish you.  You broke their heart.  Oh, are 
they ever going to punish you.  You don't even know you did that.  And they‟re going 
to smash you for it.  That's what it is.   
 
5s are Paranoid 
Why do you think 5s are paranoid?  You‟re sitting inside of the 5 Personality and see 
somebody coming and you‟re already saying, “What do they want?”, because if 
you‟re a 5, they all want something from you.  And by the way, it has nothing to do 
with you.  The great themes of projection that are there in the graph, you look at the 
2nd line and you see that they're not projecting outward.  People are looking in and 
seeing that thing in them that shines, that may or may not turn out to be the paper 
tiger, but it's something that belongs to them.  You look at somebody who has the 
21 and has the 2nd line, you know it‟s in there, it‟s their control trip, and it‟s in them.  
And then you walk up to the 5th line and you don‟t see them at all.  You see what you 
long for, what you hope for.  You never see the being; you never see anything about 
them.  You don't.  You see what you want to see and you see nothing else.   
 
The Invisible Person  
I always felt like an invisible man.  I‟ve had so much intimacy in my life and I've 
always been an invisible man.  That's what it is to be a 5 and particularly to be a 5 
Personality—the 5/1s, the 5/2s.  They‟re invisible.  They are.  They can never let you 
see them because you do not want to ever see them, because you may have to 
stone them to death and you don't want to know them personally when you do that.   
 
Human beings—we are interesting creatures.  Think about all the 2s who are 
transferred.  Think about all the 5s who are distorted, so distorted, no awareness 
behind them.  And go back and think about those 2/5s and 3/5s and think about 
what that means for them.  They don't know.  They‟re not saying, “What does that 
person want?”  They‟re in whatever their Personality element is.  The 3rd line is busy 
with its own trip.  With a 3rd line Personality, things bang into it.  Somebody bangs 
into it and says, “Oh, I'm in love with you, I think you're going to be the best lover.”  
If you‟re going to fall in love with a 3/5 you‟d better make sure it's correct for you, 
because you don‟t know what you‟re getting.  You can‟t. 
 
The Heretic isn’t Flesh and Blood 
What you get is your own mind.  That‟s what you get.  It‟s all you can get.  It‟s the 
way your own mind wants to see your relationship and your relationship to the other.

And the way your mind wants to see what the other is.  But it doesn't mean 
anything.  What keeps the heretic so powerful is that the heretic is never flesh and 
blood.  It‟s myth, illusion, it‟s something impersonal, and it‟s something not quite 
human.  It allows us to both worship it and hate it, to desire it and to destroy it.  And 
every hexagram is dependent on it to make it stand, to make its expression.  
 
Think about seduction and think about helplessness.  No conscious heretic will 
seduce without great, great care because of the consequences.  And what we deal 
with in the world are 5th line beings who are not-self.  They are in transference.  
There is no cognition to support that conditioner/conditioned seduction trip.  Oh, I 
know so many 5s who are in the change-human-beings business.  But without the 
cognition, without the awareness, it‟s just homogenization.  That‟s the sad thing for 
me about my confrères in the heretic business, all these homogenized heretics.  
They‟re more paranoid than anything else.   
 
The 2/5 and 5/2 Profiles 
It‟s interesting, being a 5/1 and talking about the 5.  I have all kinds of different 
thoughts that arise as I'm talking to you.  I guess the most interesting for me has 
always been the 5/2.  I‟m fascinated by the way in which the 5/2 has to deal with 
such distortion.  The 2/5, 5/2 is a very odd thing.  The 2 Personality is obviously 
going to display something, is going to be recognized by the other.  And at the same 
time, there is this unconscious 5 that creates this incredible expectation about the 
ability of the 2 to be able to display what appears to be there.  And they can't escape 
it.  The 2 Personality says “Leave me alone,” and the 5 says “Don‟t believe a word I 
say, come and get me.”  What a process. 
 
And to be not aware, not correct, how much pain that is going to bring into the life, 
because the 5 always pays a social price.  I did thousands of readings.  If there was 
any one of those readings that was really off, that was really out, that was really 
wrong, everybody on the planet would have heard about it.  It‟s the way it works. 
 
Reputation 
I'm a 51/25 initiator.  So I am this initiator to awaken this 5 Personality and the 
expectation is „this is what he‟s going to do to me.‟  If I don‟t do that, I‟m screwed.  
And everybody would hear about it.  Everything about being a 5 is reputation.  They 
represent the hexagram.  And the hexagram wants to be represented in the way in 
which the hexagram feels it deserves.  “No, no, no, you can't be that, you have to be 
a saint—one of the 5th lines—you have to be a saint.  No, no, no, you have to be the 
savior—another 5th line—you have to be.  We‟re not going to let you be anything 
less.  And if you don't allow us that are we ever going to go after you.”

The 5th Line Child  
Think about the children.  I always think about the children.  I know that myself.  I 
know that as a 5 child, there were enormous expectations that could never be 
fulfilled, at least not in the way in which those expectations were.  And of course, the 
moment they‟re not fulfilled is the moment there's always something.  And as a 
Manifestor with a 5, there are the suspicions.  These children who come out of the 
womb who are supposed to be the next coming and turn out to be just children, their 
parents don't forget.  They think what they wanted and expected and hoped for and 
saw in their child was actually there, because they didn‟t see their child. 
 
My mother is 97 years old.  I‟m 60.  She's my mother, after all, and I‟m a 5.  And I 
tell you, she‟s an old lady and she loves her memories, so I indulge her and listen to 
them.  And the person she talks about, that person who supposedly was me, never 
existed.  It‟s almost comical.  Never existed and I mean that, never existed.  She 
describes somebody I do not know.  And I do remember.  But then again, I'm a 5 
and you don't know.  You just don‟t.   
 
The 5 Person Cannot Be Read  
It‟s one of the dilemmas that 5s have in relationships: they cannot be read.  You do 
not know what is going on behind that.  You cannot.  It‟s just not possible.  And you 
have to accept it as a 5.  What I derive from that is my aloneness.  I recognize that 
the only awareness of self that I need is my own.  It‟s been clear to me for a very, 
very, very long time that I can never be anything else but somebody else's 
construct.  It‟s is so odd.  And for me, I have an archetypal role for a 5, obviously.  I 
do have the benefit of all this knowledge.  So, I look at it and I see, my goodness, 
what it must mean for those out there who carry that and don't know and what that 
leads to in the distortion that's out there in homogenized plane. 
 
One of the things that concern me about people who know Human Design is about 
understanding that profiles are one of those things that give you a social correctness 
that is a rarity.  It allows you to have an insight into what is used for doctors—
bedside manner.  When you know that somebody is a 1/3, as an example, you know 
if you‟re going to have a conversation with them and you lay something out, they will 
challenge it.  You know that‟s the way they are and the way it's supposed to be.   
 
If you don't know that and you‟re so proud of your little whatever it is and they 
challenge it, you can end up reacting, being upset, think certain things about them 
that are not true, and so on.  When you have this knowledge, this is all about giving 
you a foundation to beware about the nature of the world, not just yourself, but the 
world and the world around you and the beings around you.  And to give you an 
extraordinary opportunity to be able to communicate with people in a very clear way,

which means getting rid of the illusions of what you think the other should be 
relative to you. 
 
Freeing Yourself from Prejudice  
Every profile has its style.  They have their style, they have their interests. They 
have their gifts.  If you‟re going to be demanding of a 2 to be social, you‟re being 
silly.  There are all kinds of things that are just obvious you can look at and you can 
just see and begin to understand that the way in which you deal with another human 
being, you can free yourself from prejudice. 
 
When I was not-self, I was very prejudiced in the intellectual sense.  I had no 
patience for anyone who couldn't display reasonable intelligence, which by the way, 
was not a hell of a lot of people.  And it led me to look at people in very odd way, 
obviously.  It was arrogant and it cost me a lot as not-self, because that's what 
those kinds of things do.   
 
What's so fascinating for me about my own experience through this knowledge is 
how, by seeing the helplessness of life, by understanding how all beings are placed 
into the these vehicles, that these vehicles all have their construct, and in 
recognizing all of that, all you can do is show grace.  It‟s all you can do.  I allow 
other beings—it‟s not even I allow because it sounds like I'm permitting it and I'm 
not, it‟s just that I don't interfere with other beings being what they are.  Whether 
that is something that I like or not or this or that, the reality is that this is the way it 
has to be. 
 
When you understand that somebody carries a 5, you have to catch yourself in your 
own expectations about what you think you want to see from them.  Be careful.  And 
being aware of that, seeing how that works, you‟re feeling their seductive power, 
remember.  It‟s not your fault.  There is no fault in all of this.  There never is.  There 
is the 5 and without awareness, not even understanding they‟re putting out a 
frequency that is seductive and is going to bring that projection.   
 
Every time I teach at any level of this knowledge, I'm always struck by the same 
thing.  Without Strategy and Authority, there's nothing in this life.  There's nothing 
but homogenization, confusion, and distortion.  Nothing.  Because as long as the 
mind is involved, there's no way out.  There isn't.  As long as the mind is controlling 
your life there is absolutely nothing you can do.  You‟re lost.  You‟re just lost.  And 
you end up suffering deeply.  It‟s so simple.   
 
Deconditioning Away from Homogenization to Differentiation  
This is the whole thing.  It‟s the deconditioning.  It‟s the deconditioning away from 
homogenization to differentiation.  It's about being able to accept a possibility, and 
it's only a possibility, it‟s not a probability, a possibility that along this way there are

those who you can commune with in an extraordinary way.  It‟s what we‟re here for.  
I so enjoyed being able teach at a very high intellectual level, to be able to deal with 
things that are essential truths about the nature of being and the nature of life.  It's 
a privilege, it‟s a great privilege.  And that it‟s more than just chit chat, because I am 
a 5; it is practical. 
 
This is the one thing that's going to save a 5 in its life.  I told the story often.  If I 
had had my mystical experience and all it had been was a monologue by the Voice 
telling me Rave Cosmology, giving me some interesting tidbits about my cycle 
through the warp and woof of the biverse and not given me Design, I never would've 
told a living soul.  I‟m a 5.  I know that sounds crazy.  I know that people are going 
to project that it's crazy.  I know the moment that I try to convince them, they‟re 
going to think I‟m even crazier.  It‟s so obvious to me.  I‟m a 5. 
 
Practical Application 
It was the fact that I was given something I could not refute, that I could not just 
call madness that I could not just shove aside.  It was logical.  It could be tested.  I 
was, as an understatement, duly impressed.  So, as a 5 in starting that journey, you 
really get to understand what it is to be a 5.  And it‟s not over yet.  I understand that 
as well.  But I brought, I carried, helpless as all that, this whole process, because I 
could seduce with something that was practical.  If it was practical it wasn't going to 
blow up in my face.   
 
Some of you know me long enough to remember my various early lectures, my free 
lectures, I would get on stage and the first thing I would say to people, “Don't 
believe me, don't trust me.  Don‟t get suckered in here.  Just listen to a story.  It‟s 
practical, it‟s just practical.”  It‟s why the great distillation of this knowledge is that 
life is about decision making, practical, deeply practical and transforming.  And if 
you‟re a 5 and you have nothing practical to offer, shut up and go away because 
you're only going to do yourself damage.  And in the end, you're only going to have 
to deal with punishment that, in essence, you do not deserve.   
 
But remember, you are expected to stand up for the hexagram.  They don‟t like it if 
you don‟t do a good job.  It's practicality.  This is the wonder of it all.  It really is.  
This is when you get to see the heretic at its very best.  It‟s the 49.5 “practical 
provisions in revolutionary times.”  If you want a revolution, you‟d better bring the 
practical goodies.  That‟s what Human Design is, a revolution in consciousness based 
on the practical application of mechanics.   
 
So, anyone who is carrying that, anyone you‟re going to deal with, anybody you 
meet in this life who carries a 5th line, it is the deepest advice you can give them:  
“Whatever you're going to do in this life, make sure it has a practical application.  If 
that's the case, you‟ll be a success, whatever it is.  But if it‟s not, hey, then you have 
the reputation problem.  It follows you wherever you go.”

Ibiza and 3/5s Haunted and Not Forgiven 
One of those funny stories that I had in Ibiza in the early years, ones that sort of 
became known locally, something that had happened me.  I began to collect data, 
charts of people that I knew.  At some point I had 60 or 70 charts of locals in my 
community on the island, and when I say locals, these were all expatriates from 
various countries and were sort of an international tribe.  I was stunned by the 
statistics, because one day I decided to sit down and look at all of those charts and 
see what was in common, what wasn‟t in common, all kinds of things. 
 
It was disproportionately full of 3/5s.  Two and a half times more 3/5s than 
statistically is correct in any population sample.  And of course, this is Ibiza and 
black sheep island and there were all these 3/5s who fled their homelands, their 
hometowns, their cultures, their societies, all of them fleeing their reputation, their 
reputation of not being able to hack it, make it, do it, be it, because it haunts them.  
And they're not forgiven.  It‟s the thing about them, they‟re not.  They‟re not 
forgiven their errors.  They will be constantly reminded of them.  It‟s just the way 
that it is.  There‟s no way to escape. 
 
Being a 5 Personality Teaches You to be Very Connected to Yourself  
One of the things about being a 5 Personality you learn is that it teaches you to be 
very connected to yourself.  And it‟s an extreme in my design because of certain 
activations that I have.  It really gives you this very, very solid footing to stand on, 
because you can't believe anything that anybody says.  If anybody really knows me, 
one of the things they know is that I don't like praise.  I‟m a 5.  It's always 
something that makes me uncomfortable.  I'm immediately, immediately suspicious.  
Because I don‟t believe what other people see.  
 
I've learned all my life that they don't see me.  So, if they see something that 
smacks of the positive or the terrific or this and that, I don‟t believe it either.  I just 
look at it with the same sort of squint of my eye and watch the movie, because it 
what it is to be a 5.  I guess it is very helpful in the sense of being a little more 
detached than I think other lines. 
 
It‟s the whole thing about the conditioning/conditioner business.  It really is.  It is 
the thing that makes change possible on this planet, change in human beings.  I 
know that.  Every human being I've deconditioned is a human being who has a 
better life.  And they know that.  Every human being Human Design will ever 
decondition is going to have a better life and there‟s no question about that.  So, I 
understand the beauty of how conditioning can be something that is so powerful and 
positive.  I‟m a dualist and not a moralist.  It‟s all things; it‟s always like that.  
There‟s all this “this and that” out there.  The magic is not to be mentally involved in 
trying to live out your script.

Freedom Comes from Watching the Movie  
What I hope I can really get across to you is that your lines have to flow out of you 
as natural as they can be.  This is the breath that gives those lines the life that‟s 
you.  You can't get there with the mind.  You get there through the body.  You get 
there through your Inner Authority.  How magical it is.  How in that Inner Authority 
lies all the possibilities.  And in understanding that, in making those decisions as 
yourself, you‟re free, because you are.  It is an extraordinary quality of freedom in 
that you can watch how it works instead of trying to control it, because there's 
nothing you need to control.  It‟s about watching it.   
 
I have learned so much just watching how my profile works.  It's not me.  It‟s the 
whole thing about that I'm 21 years now watching.  It is amazing what you get to 
see how this whole package does its thing.  And no longer is it interesting to me that 
there is no real identity to be revealed underneath this Superman's suit.  It‟s just 
another Superman's suit; whatever the hell it is.  And what is eternal, what is 
perfect; the “I am” is something that is just watching; nothing more, nothing less. 
 
In the correctness that comes out of that Strategy and Authority, the heretic, 
however the heretic exists in the conscious and the unconscious, in this profile or in 
that profile, they will operate correctly.  That‟s all that matters.  You don‟t have to be 
concerned about it anymore.  You don't.  You can just watch it work and see what 
happens.  This is the beauty of this life.  This is the great entertainment.  It‟s what I 
love about it so much.  If I had to work at being Ra Uru Hu, it would be terrible.  
What a drag.  That‟s a lot of work.  I don‟t want to work at that.  I don‟t want to 
have to try to figure out all the things that this thing figures out.  I don‟t want to 
have anything to do with that.  I just want to watch and see what happens.  It‟s so 
much easier.  And it‟s entertaining.   
 
We’re Here Only for the Possibility of Us, Not the Fear Game  
We take ourselves so seriously, human beings.  The not-self is a very serious 
creature, it really is.  Everything upsets it.  Everything is important.  Everything is 
“this and that.”  It doesn‟t know what‟s going on.  It‟s not what we‟re here for.  It‟s 
not what the nine-centered being is all about.  It really isn‟t.  The nine-centered 
being is here for consciousness.  We‟re not here for the survival game.  We're not 
here for the fear game.  We‟re not here for all of that.  We‟re not here to organize 
ourselves.  We're not here to dominate the planet. 
 
Each and every one of us is here for the possibility of us, nothing else.  The 
serendipity of your existence is the treasure.  They come and they go.  It's all about 
what you do while you're here.  In this incarnation, in this life, the only 
measurement is awareness.  There is no other measurement.  There isn‟t.  It‟s not 
about what you have or where you go, it‟s about awareness.  It‟s only in awareness

that you get to see what this is for, how beautiful it is.  How amazing.  And all of that 
is rooted in you.   
 
And it doesn't matter what our costumes are, our crosses are, or our designs.  We 
each have a unique grounding in this world.  And we each have a gift.  It is our 
uniqueness, and the expression out of that uniqueness.  This is what the promise is, 
a more interesting world, deeper and deeper and deeper communion.  It‟s what's 
possible. 
 
The Throat Center and Communication 
Once we‟re beyond the fear of survival, once you can trust the mechanism within 
yourself that will guide you correctly in this life, then everything about existence is 
focused on your awareness and what is unique in us as human beings.  It‟s our 
Throat Center.  Our Throat Center is really amazing.  This ability through the 12, this 
ability to be able to articulate, the way in which our capacity to be able to 
communicate was the bedrock of our conquering of this plane.  And now, as nine-
centered beings, the opportunity that is there for us to be able to exalt 
communication.  Not the lies of the not-self  mind, but the unique truths that each 
being carries as potential that is expressed through their drama, the drama of their 
profile, their cross, their “this,” their “that.”  How lovely it all is.  How nicely it is all 
organized and all we need to do is sit back and enjoy it.   
 
I'm tired of the plane of suffering.  I'm tired of the homogenized cliché about life on 
this planet.  It saddens me deeply that so many human beings on this planet suffer 
so deeply day after day after day.  It‟s so insane, in a way, when something like this 
exists in the world.  And yet I know that knowledge, truth always has its limitations.  
But you, this is your fractal, this is your possibility.  You have the knowledge.  You 
have to see that no matter how deep you go in this knowledge, no matter what I 
could teach you, if you collected 21 years of my Human Design work, it isn't worth 
what it is for you just to live your design.  
 
Follow Your Strategy and Authority  
Follow your Strategy and Authority.  There is nothing else.  Everything else will come 
into place.  And if the beauty of the intellectuality of this knowledge intrigues you, 
wonderful, because it will allow you to be able to see as you watch these elements in 
yourself and in others play out.  It‟s magnificent.  It's only then that you begin to 
sense that you're really not from here.  It‟s something that I enjoy very much.  I 
always laugh at people in their alien trip.  If you need to find an alien you just need 
to look at my passenger.  They are alien like yours.   
 
It so happens, it all takes place on this plane in the way in which this maia works.  It 
doesn‟t mean we belong here.  It doesn‟t mean it‟s ours.  Passenger consciousness, 
it‟s our journey.  It is what we're here to take in, because it's possible, because the

bio-form is evolved enough.  And here with the mechanics, this is something that 
truly we can master, because the nine-centered being is the last chance for perfected 
individual consciousness, and it‟s there to be had.

Lecture Six 
The 6th Line: The Role Model 
 
 
Hello to all of you and welcome to this close of 
our journey to the decoding of the hexagram 
and we come to the 6th line.  It‟s so interesting 
when you look at the hexagram, we‟ve 
basically have looked at it.  Sixes are odd.  
They‟re not really a part of anything.  There is 
nowhere for them to go in the classic sense.  It 
is a jumping off point.  It‟s a point of 
transition.  The 6th line carries this theme of 
transition.  What fascinates me about it is that 
it obviously is deeply mutative in our time.  
And when I say our time, I really mean from 
1781, the advent of the nine-centered being, 
that this is where the mutation in the 
transformation of the vehicle is so strong; that 
is, the holistic vehicle, the Uranian vehicle as opposed to the Saturnian vehicle.   
 
A Mutative Framework for the Uranian Life  
It is clear to me that the 6th line as it appears in profile, that it is a deep indicator of 
those beings who in a sense are—I say this at the risk of being misunderstood—that 
they are the most fragile.  What I mean by that is that mutation is not an easy thing.  
And nothing is punished quicker in nature than failed mutation.  I began to be very 
concerned about 10 years ago when I realized that my generation, the baby 
boomers, were all going to be hitting their Kiron in roughly a decade of the largest 
population in the history of the planet reaching 50 years of age.  It was so clear to 
me given what I understood about the mechanics of the nine-centered life structure, 
that the nine-centered life structure being is rooted in the way in which it is lived out 
through the 6th line principle, so that those beings are 3/6s, 4/6s, 6/2s and 6/3s, 
that these four particular profile variations are providing a mutative framework for 
the Uranian life. 
 
What that means in a sense is that from a health point of view, just purely from a 
health point of view, because of the nature of what we understand about the 
tripartite life process, this is one of those things where you have the first 
approximately 30 years, the Saturn cycle, you have the 20-year interregnum, that is,

the 20 years between Saturn and the Kiron return and in this you have the so-called 
roof stage, and then you have the post-Kiron phase leading out towards the standard 
of the 84,  you have this post-Kiron phase of the so-called coming off the roof and 
coming into the world, this world in which the flowering is supposed to take place.  
Here we have the so-called three dimension.  In other words, this is when the 6th line 
in a profile for the first 30 years lives out a kind of premature process, a process that 
involves the trial and error that is there.   
 
The 6th Line Profile: A Kangaroo 
I see 6th line in the profile as a kangaroo.  The kangaroo is the best example of it, 
because when a kangaroo is actually born it is a very, very tiny little thing.  It looks 
a little bit like a salamander and it crawls out of its mother‟s womb and it crawls up 
to the pouch.  Now of course, it‟s not the same time frame, but nonetheless, this is 
its trial and error period.  As a matter of fact, it cannot be helped by the mother.  
The mother could actually kill it if it tried to help.  It has to find its own way.  It has 
to crawl up through the thick hairs on the mother's body and finally eventually get 
into the pouch.  And then it develops in the pouch; what is known as a joey, a little 
kangaroo that is hanging out of the pouch all the time.  And then finally, it gets out 
of the pouch. 
 
The thing for me that is so clear about this is when you're looking at the human 
process is that this first, this 30-year cycle, for me it‟s the 6th line being in a sense 
not really being here yet.  It‟s almost like this is pre-birth.  But of course, I can‟t put 
it in that context, but I want you to grasp it in that sense.  In other words, its 
formation is taking place before the actual formation is there.  In other words, it is 
something that moves very slowly to build up to a point in which there is this 
possibility. 
 
6th Line Beings are under Stress  
Now, of course, when we look at this in terms of the deeper ends of the knowledge—
PHS and Rave Psychology—one of the things that we get to see in the idealized life 
pattern is that it is in this particular phase where what is essential is to be able to 
operate correctly and to be able to eat correctly.  Sixth lines beings are under a lot of 
stress.  I began to predict 10 years ago that there would be the return of certain 
phenomena, for example, polio was an example that I gave.  And sure enough we 
started to get tremendous examples of post-polio syndrome, people that had been 
free of polio for basically two decades, the roof period, who had had it before went 
into its kind of remission only to have it come back.   
 
All of this can be interpreted as something that is frightening or this or that or 
whatever the case may be.  It‟s not said in that sense.  But, it is clear to me that in a 
6th line profile is the cliché of the good that die young, and it is a cliché of the not so 
old who die too young.  The only period that is truly safe for 6th line being is the roof

period.  It‟s the only period where in the physical sense that they are in a situation 
that is relatively safe for them.  There's a tremendous amount of pressure on the 6th 
line being. 
 
The Role Model 
So we have to go in our examination here to begin to understand what this is about.  
And I guess the place to begin is the role model.  That‟s a very difficult term.  We 
intend to equate it immediately with example, to be an example.  And yes, obviously 
there is that value that you can attach to this.  But there's something else.  This is 
not a generic role model.  In other words, this is not, for example, somebody who is 
a priest who happens to be a good priest, this is not a role model, this is an example.  
It‟s an example of a priest, whatever the case may be.   
 
A role model is something different because it's not based on being homogenized by 
some other authority.  It‟s not being an example for someone or for some thing.  
There is nothing—look at the 55.6 because it‟s 
coming—there is nothing that more deeply, 
deeply touches the core of the 6 than 
selfishness.  And again, I don't mean that in 
any way to be in a negative.  That is, they pay 
the price.  They are designed in such a way 
that they will go through the phenomena of 
the “this and that” of life in a very deep way.   
 
And yet, ultimately when you look at all 6s, 
the best place to see the undercurrent—
remember that we're looking at a line that is a 
script in the play.  The role model is a unique 
example.  It's not a generic example.  So, a 
role model isn‟t dependent upon either looking 
over its shoulder to see whether it‟s being a good enough example for those that it's 
patterning itself after, or looking to see if it is acceptable to the other based on some 
model that the other has an expectation for.  Oh no, it‟s nothing like that.   
 
It is the unique example.  And of course everything about it, if you look at the 
Personality level and you look at the continuity in the language to what it is to be the 
6, when you look at 6s‟ motivation, talk about paradox.  You look at 6s‟ motivation 
and you see it‟s no motivation at all.  All the Colors are motivating Colors in the 
construct except the 6 which is anti-motivation.  It‟s anti-motivation.   
 
The 6 is different and what it‟s moving towards is what we're all moving towards, 
what the next era demands.  In 2027 when we move into the 6th line theme of the 
global cycle, when we move into a global cycle that is rooted in individualism and 
individual survival, that this unique example is something that is so profound to 
grasp.  It‟s why we are caught in this 6 mutation, that this is the pattern, that we are 
moving towards this place where we are neither this nor that.  Only the role model,

only the 6 by its design is given a life trajectory that says “okay, I‟m this in the 3rd 
line phase, I‟m that when I‟m on the roof,” and then like the Zen Master who says 
neti, neti—that “not this, not that.”  But “not this, not that” as some kind of poetic 
philosophical trick.  The “not this, not that” because there is not this “not this, not 
that,” there is always is this and that, but that one is disconnected from the “this and 
that,” that one is looking beyond it. 
 
The 6th line being standing there looking out over the crowd seeing something else, 
unfortunately, usually having its feet stepped on at the same time, but nonetheless 
looking beyond.  It's not this or that.  And it‟s not that it won‟t pay attention if this or 
that shows up, because it is a role model.  It exudes themes of leadership and trust 
that are inherent in the 6th line.  It is the „fool on the hill,‟ the unique example that 
doesn't fit into any kind of example, and yet when everyone is in trouble, and when 
it appears like the gods have gone mad they go up to the fool and they say, “excuse 
me, can you help us?”   
 
But it's not as if the fool is concerned about their “this and that.”  That it is only 
incidental to their view.  It is a thing, this coming off the roof.  And of course, I have 
no idea in that sense; first of all I‟m not a 6th line being so it is not something that is 
part of my process, it is something that I watch.  It is something that I feel in the 
way in which the world works, but it is not something that I can speak from 
experience. 
 
What is Possible When Coming off the Roof is Questionable  
What is clear to me when I look at it, and looking at it is another story, what is clear 
for me is that to be a conditioned being who has been deconditioned who is a 6th line 
being that what is possible coming off the roof is questionable.  It's about how well 
you‟re prepared before you get there.  And it‟s real preparation both physically and 
psychologically to be able to go through that process.  Otherwise, you're going to 
meet instead of the possibilities, you're going to be dragged into the “this” or to the 
“that.”  The moment that happens is the moment all the weaknesses that were once 
there reemerge and reemerge in a form that no longer has the physical ability to be 
able to handle such a thing. 
 
The interesting thing about a 6th line being in their 3rd line phase is that they get the 
advantage of 3rd line resiliency.  Most 6th line beings who go through hell in their 3rd 
line phase are remarkably able to survive it.  But the moment that they go fully into 
the 6th form they‟ve used up, like cats‟ lives, a lot of juice in that process of dealing 
with the chaos of the early part of their life. 
 
The 6 is something we don't really know much about in a way.  The key for me 
always is to go down deep and I look at the architecture, I look at the tonal 
architecture.  How can I describe this to you?  I think the best way to describe this to 
you is this way, there‟s a 5 and then there‟s the 6 and the 6 and the 6.  This is the 
way everything is constructed.  And you notice that the foundation of everything, 
which is Bases, only go to a 5.  So what the hell is this?  It makes you think.

It leads me back to my morning sidebar about the nature of carbon—six neutrons, 
six protons, six electrons, but anyway I won‟t stay with that.  What I'm trying to 
show you is 6s are part of the holistic illusion.  They‟re really the holistic illusion from 
the Tone up, after all.  So the 6s are really strange.  There is something very, very 
different about them because they carry a different kind of possibility.  And in that 
sense they are a loop, in a way. 
 
PHS and the 6th Color  
When you get to the end of profile and you get to the 6/3 the next profile is the 1/3.  
The loop doesn‟t go this way, it actually goes to the next hexagram, but, 
nonetheless.  It‟s is one of the things I find interesting.  We had a discussion before 
the class dealing with PHS and the 6th Color, which is one of the most interesting of 
the dietary regimens in terms of circumstances, that is, daytime feeders and night 
feeders.  The right configuration is for nocturnals.  That is, for those human beings 
that are designed to eat exclusively when the sun is down.   
 
What is fascinating to me about that is that if you follow the trajectory of PHS dietary 
regimen through the first three conditions and then to the two basic circumstances 
that are there, what you‟re looking at is an evolutionary progression in the way in 
which humanity itself is evolved.  The digestive system mirroring the way in which 
our societies, our cultures are developed, and so forth and so on. 
 
But then you get to the 6.  The moment that you get to the 6 and dealing with the 
6th Color to the right is as advanced as we can see in the program, that this is a 
return to not simply the primitive of the caveman/cavewoman, because of course 
that's the old primitive, but in a sense a new kind of primitive; in other words, a new 
foundation for a new kind of dietary process.  
 
It‟s my assumption that true raves that manage to come together in the first 
conscious Penta, that I imagine that they will be nocturnal feeders.  I don‟t think 
they will eat in the daylight.  But anyway, that is speculation on my part, obviously.  
But I think that it is another process in this evolutionary movement—and in silence. 
 
So, when I look at the 6 I don't carry any baggage.  That is, getting caught up in 
what everything else is and laying on the 6 because you cannot do that.  And when 
you go down to the tonal level, that‟s when you really get to the mystery of it.  That 
is, it is a sensory capacity that is not something that we understand.  And it‟s not 
something that we particularly experience.  So, we're dealing with in the opening up 
of a Solar Plexus process, a Solar Plexus process that is not realized yet.

Autistic Children  
I mentioned in a class that I was fascinated by a recent study on autism because it‟s 
been a major subject of mine.  One of the things they discovered is that in autistic 
children certain genes are responsible for a shutdown in the way in which they 
translate experience and it‟s a neural process.  The thing that is so interesting is that 
clearly for me, because I've been predicting all the years in Design that the neural 
development in the Solar Plexus Center has yet to reach that point in the time frame 
where the connections are established that allow it to take over from what happens 
when those particular neural functions are shutdown.  That is, the brain experiencing 
things, rather than what the future is predicting which is that the Solar Plexus is 
going to be the awareness, the experiential zone. 
 
What we have right now is that we‟re on the threshold of the manifestation, if I can 
put it in that terminology, of a new kind of awareness.  So the potential of that 
awareness is there within us.  But again, in the sense of what the 6 is, it‟s something 
really yet not realized.  It‟s like all the people that I have counseled in terms of the 
Kiron return, and I have counseled many, they always ask me about what it means 
to come off the roof and I always smile and tell them I don't know.  And of course, 
it's true.  I don't know.  I don't know in the sense that it is a unique process, any 
more than people who ask me what is it going to be like at the end of the seven 
years.  I never told anybody what it was going to be like.  I didn‟t know what it was 
going to be like for them.  How could I?  I simply knew that whoever goes through 
that process is deeply aware of the fact that they been through it.  And their markers 
in the way they see it is unique.  I've yet to see a commonality; vague ones, but this 
is all about differentiating.   
 
It is about the expression of uniqueness.  It‟s what makes the 6 so remarkable.  And 
it makes this off-the-roof stage even more remarkable because what it's really 
saying is can you stand on your own in your own world, because that‟s what it is.  It 
is what it is, that you are alone in your illusion.  And it does not mean that you are 
by yourself and it does not mean you are this or that.  It simply means that you are 
alone in your illusion and that's where you live and everything else is what you 
observe.  
 
The whole observe/observer thing, the whole not being this and that, being beyond 
the “this and that,” does not mean you interact with this or that.  Obviously any 
interaction has to be absolutely correct.  Strategy and Authority is the only thing that 
is always going to make sure that the bottom line is there.   
 
Written question: Does it apply to all the 6 lines?   
 
Ra: Does it apply to all the 6 lines?  Well, to some degree, but I wouldn‟t overstate 
it.  That is, lines are singular activations and the profile is something that emerges as 
a holistic phenomena.  So, as I mentioned a number of times with similar kinds of 
questions, everything has value, but isn‟t necessarily practical.  I don't think it's 
practical.

I think where it might be interesting is in those lines in the Rave I‟Ching that have a 
blue heading.  Those lines that have a blue heading are referencing the fact that it's 
a lifelong process the way the line develops.  If that turns out to be a 6th line and it's 
got a blue heading, I would say that yes, I think you could quite easily look at the 
tripartite process and the way it would impact that specific line.  But again, I would 
keep it to where it's practical it would bring some kind of analytical value. 
 
The 3/6 and 4/6 Profiles 
I want to mention as well the obvious and yet how deeply different it is what it 
means to have a 6th line body and in essence be a prisoner to the tripartite process 
when the psychology is rooted in the seven-centered dream.  This is something that 
can be very, very uncomfortable for the 3/6s, for the 4/6s.  That is, what is going on 
is not what they are connected to.  And of course, it can be very frightening.  It is a 
commonality for 3/6s and 4/6s to have physical problems that suddenly emerge in 
their process and in a sense they are shocked, often the shock itself is enough to 
distort the rest of their life.  So, it can be quite uncomfortable if they‟re not 
prepared, particularly 4/6s and I say that only because there's only so many more of 
them than the 3/6s.   
 
4/6 children truly need to be counseled well, and particularly in terms of their 
relationships.  This is where they make their deepest blunders and they end up being 
damaged by those relationships.  And often it is not the way you think.  You‟re 15 
years old and instead of being a 4/6 you‟re living out a 4/3 and you go out for a ride 
with a friend who just got a car and you end up dead.  I don't mean to create—I just 
want to give you examples that let you know that this can be quite a thing.  It isn‟t 
so for everyone, but it‟s there.   
 
The dilemma is for them that at the unconscious level it‟s very difficult for them.  It's 
difficult for them in the sense that they don't know it's there and without help it can 
be something that leads to a lot of problems.  Yes, the 3/6 is more flexible.  Like the 
6/3, they‟re up and down and all over the place so they tend to be more resilient 
because of their 3-ness.   
 
The 6/2 and 6/3 Profiles 
When we go to the Personality, though, again it‟s a different story and here is where 
you really see the difference.  That is, to be an unconscious 6 as a role model, you‟re 
totally dependent on the correctness of your vehicle to lead to the transformation of 
how the way in which you can perceive and operate as an awareness to fully grasp 
where you are as a being, because this profound change is taking place at a deep 
unconscious level. 
 
When it‟s at the Personality level, the dilemma is that the vehicle isn‟t ready.  So 
many 6/2s and 6/3s are so far ahead of their bodies and often because they‟re 6/2s

or 6/3s, fail to respect their bodies and end up a really messing them up by abusing 
them out of ignorance.  It‟s so interesting about understanding the dilemmas in the 
way that they shift when you're moving from whether the line is going to be 
appearing on the Personality side or it‟s going to be representing the body type.   
 
What you know about a 6th body is that it has vulnerabilities.  You know that it is 
fragile in its developmental stage, the first 30 years, which means that being raised 
correctly, being fed correctly is the one thing that is going to ameliorate that, and 
then the 3-phase because something else, which I've never really discussed because 
there really isn't much of a point until we have children that are raised this way. 
 
The 3rd Line Phase 
The 3rd line is, after all, the great key to discovery and ideally, this is about the 
intellectual and physical expansion of the being.  It‟s a tremendous phase for 
learning and finding out things and not a phase for getting messed up, which is the 
tradition of 6th line beings who are not-self.  It‟s a totally different thing to really 
prepare properly for the maturity as a 6th line being.  If you're going to get to a place 
of the balance between the “this and that” of being, every 6th line being needs to 
move from pessimism to optimism.  It‟s just a natural phenomenon.  And it is a 
marker for them, a signpost for them of this transition that takes place. 
 
You'll notice for example that in the not-self a lot of people who have their Saturn 
return will carry their pessimism until they‟re 35, some of them even later.  It‟s very, 
very difficult for them to shed that pessimism that they took on in that early stage.  
Again, to really understand the potential of a 6th line being raised correctly is to see 
that this is an intense phase for superior development, a phase of learning so much 
because of course by being raised correctly and nourished correctly, by operating 
according to your Strategy and Authority all those 3rd line adventures, that you're 
going to get into are adventures that are correct regardless of what the outcome is 
going to be.  In other words, it‟s part of the nourishing and development of the being 
itself, not what we see. 
 
The On the Roof Stage  
So, the complexity of what it is to be a 6th line being in seeing that most people to 
date come to Human Design technically in their roof stage if they‟re a 6th line being.  
And they‟re usually carrying with them all the pain of the 3rd line phase, which is why 
they show up in the first place.  They often don't get much time to be on the roof 
before the clock takes care of things and moves them forward.  One of the things 
I've always done when I was doing readings for anyone who had a 6th line was to tell 
them not to waste their time.  If it's correct for them, embrace everything that you 
can, because you want to be able to go out of that door in prime condition.  It's very 
important.

There is almost an invisible stress on all 6th line beings when they come off the roof.  
It‟s like the program is waiting to measure them.  When I first described this to 
students long ago now, I talked to them about how the past comes back to you, 
those things that were your weaknesses when you were young, not so much in the 
same way, not the same people, but the archetype that screwed you over when you 
were 17 is the same archetype that shows up when you‟re 52; all of these things as 
a way of understanding this.  I don‟t want to call it a testing, because it isn‟t, it‟s just 
the way mutation works.  It‟s like you‟re coming out of the shoot as a potential 
mutation that is successful and you're instantly measured by it.  And if you don't 
measure up to it, it can truly crush you.  It‟s just a thing. 
 
The Kiron Return 
There‟s something else I notice about this about the nature of the conditioning in the 
world because I think it's fascinating.  As I said, I‟m a 5/1 so I'm not directly 
connected to this, I don't have a lot of 6th lines, I have a few, but it is so obvious to 
me how different my life has been since my Kiron return and how deeply my actual 
Kiron return is what I'm living and what has happened to me.  And as I said, I‟m not 
a 6th line being.  The fact that they are carrying the mutation is that they are 
carrying the structure for us.  We all have a Uranian vehicle.  And these vehicles are 
vehicles that operate in that way.  That is, they have phased development, these 
three areas. 
 
What we have in the 6th line being is that they are deeply marking it, in a sense.  
They are the ones that are most naturally connected to it.  But all of us are 
influenced by it.  And obviously, someone like myself, for example, with my 
awareness and my sensitivity to the way in which the mechanics work, it was 
amazing for me to watch it.  I was very curious to see whether it would really have 
an impact on my life.  It had a startling impact in my life.  It really did.  
 
So, it is something that in talking about this and in talking about the phenomena not 
to assume that somehow you were free of it because you‟re not a 6th line being.  I do 
not believe that we have the same vulnerabilities.  In other words, I don't think that 
somebody who is not a 6th line being runs the same risks in the Kironian phase 
physically that 6th line beings do, because they're the ones that are carrying a deeper 
level of this mutation into the future.  Those of us that are connected to this 
knowledge are the first ones that are truly beginning to live what is to be one of 
these creatures, one of these nine-centered creatures and slowly but surely we will 
get to see the emergence of what is the possibility of what the 6th line can mean.  
But we will only see it uniquely. 
 
The Role Model Establishes that We have a Right to Our Own Authority  
Everything about the knowledge is pointed in the same direction.  When the 
knowledge was given to me in 1987, it‟s a long time, basically I was pointed in one

direction and in one direction only, understanding that every single human being 
could run their own life at every level—practical, spiritual, whatever you want to call 
it.  And I looked out at the world and I thought this is an incredible challenge to take 
this vast homogenized plane and the density of its sheephoodness, and to imagine 
that it's possible that you can wean these slaves off of the suckling from the 
program.  It is what is being carried in this.  It‟s why the information is here.  It is 
why we are coming to the close of this era and we are about to enter into an era that 
if you are not going to be a wolf you are going to perish.  It‟s just like that.   
 
I say that in the sense that the infrastructure is slowly but surely going to break 
down.  It isn't going to take forever.  It is about making sure that there are uniquely 
empowered beings who are going to be able to survive on their plane in their time in 
a way that is correct for them.  I know this world that is coming is not for me.  I 
know that.  I only have a few 6 lines.  I have no connection to that cycle.  It‟s 
another world and it‟s right for me.  Eighteen years from now I‟ll be nearly 80 years 
old.  It‟ll be all right that it‟s not my world, that it belongs to somebody else.  But I 
also understand that it's not something bad that‟s coming either.  I‟m not a this-and-
that being.  It‟s not about that.  It's about whether or not you're equipped for your 
world, whatever the world is going to be. 
 
This is what the role model is here to establish.  It‟s what every one of you in your 
experiment is establishing day by day.  What's giving this knowledge such strength is 
the realization of this inherent truth that each of us has a right to our own authority 
and to live by our own authority.  There is nothing else.  There isn't.  It‟s only when 
we can meet each other and we are correct for ourselves that we can meet each 
other because we live by our own authority. 
 
The 6 is Totally for Itself  
I‟m a 5.  I stand underneath the 6.  The 5 is all about conditioning.  It is about fixing 
things, changing things.  It‟s at the 5 that you get all of the forces that have 
controlled you, that have controlled humanity.  I know that.  I‟m an apostate.  I turn 
my back always on my own kind.  It seems to suit me.  But I understand that this 
era is over.  This is the end, period.  Once you understand this, once you understand 
your way to be your authority, there is no need for conditioners, the forces that 
shape the way human beings think and act and move and all of this.  It's about time. 
 
And you can see the progression.  The 4 was over there trying to make all the 
neighbors behavior in the same way.  The 5 was over there trying to get a nation to 
coalesce.  And the 6, the 6 says that was very nicely done, thank you very much, but 
I'm not interested.  I‟m just not interested.  I'm only interested in myself and my 
own process and the correctness of myself in my own process, which means that I'm 
neither going to be a disadvantage or an advantage, that I'm going to be appropriate 
when it's appropriate or not, that I‟m going to be useful when it's useful or not, that 
I‟m going to be available when I‟m available or not.  But I‟m going to be totally for 
myself, correct within myself.  Only then can I be useful or not; only then.

Outer Authority  
It's the beauty of what outer authority is.  Outer authority is not about salesmanship.  
It‟s not about letting everybody know that you've got it and you want to give it to 
them, because it has nothing to do with that, because that‟s something a 5 would 
do.  I know; I do it, don‟t I?  It‟s not something that is natural to a 6.  It isn‟t.  You 
go to the 6 and you ask for wisdom, you‟ll get it.  But don't expect that they‟re going 
to stand there with a sign saying “wisdom over here, come and see me.”  They don't, 
because that‟s not the point of their existence.  The point of their existence is to be 
what they are, to breathe their life.   
 
It all comes down in the end to finding a way to make an enormous leap in your 
awareness, to begin to see how truly what occurs in your life isn't really you.  It is a 
phenomenon that you experience.  And the more deeply you‟re immersed in the 
observance of the phenomena and as long as you are operating mechanically in a 
way that is correct for you, you‟ve got such a great show.  We've been working a 
long time to get from the 1 to the 6.  In this particular cycle it‟s 400 years of 
development.  And you see that 6 and all it's pointing at is one thing and one thing 
only.   
 
When you come off the roof and you‟re a 6th line profile, the first thing that's going to 
happen to you is that there are going to be those archetypal returns that are in your 
face and you‟ve got to deal with it.  And how you deal with it, if you‟re there in your 
Strategy and Authority and your awareness, you‟re going to love it because you‟ll 
remember.  It's so different, because it's not your not-self mind that‟s answering, 
that's dealing with the other.  It‟s not your not-self mind that is distorted about what 
it thinks it thinks it thinks it thinks.  It‟s the purity of you just being what you are in 
that moment relative to whatever it is there.  We are not alone.  We are moving in 
space. 
 
We’re Here to Stand Alone in Our Truth  
In the aloneness of your own authority the world is crowded.  It isn't about what the 
illusion provides—the lovers, the friends, the children, the “this,” the “that,” the ups 
and the downs, the movie.  That‟s what you‟re here to enjoy, not within the persona 
of life itself, no, no, no, no, no.  To live in one of these forms is to know the good, 
the bad, the ugly, the whole story, to be here and watch yourself be this or that.  It‟s 
about being able to see it, because that‟s all we are, it‟s what the role model points 
us.  It says we‟re here to stand alone in our truth and not folly, the folly of mind, but 
the truth that is derived from being in a role model.  It‟s a role model vehicle.  It‟s a 
unique, differentiated form.  It is only going to operate correctly when it is 
expressing its unique differentiated form.   
 
We‟re so caught up in the not-self homogenized world.  It‟s so caught up with its 
illusions.  Oh how deep they are, those illusions, deep, deep, deep, deep.  They‟re 
not going to escape that.  They're not going to escape taking orders from their 
religious leaders, their political leaders, their educators, you name it, their lovers and

friends.  It‟s why it's so important for you to grasp where you are.  What an 
extraordinary serendipity to be where you are.  If you're going to embrace the 
future, then you have to embrace the future as yourself.  You don't belong to 
anything.  I love Groucho Marx.  He said, “I would never belong to an organization 
that would have me as a member.”  Now, I‟m being cute, but your own authority is 
what this whole process is about.  
 
The End of the Movie  
This is the end of the movie by the way.  There is no 7th line.  Yes, there are always 
cycles, but this is the end of the movie.  In the larger scale this is where we are.  
This is what is pointing us at the necessary framework and tools to survive in the 
future, what's needed.  But more than that, whenever you get to the end in some 
ways you can get to the very, very best of what it is to be in this process, this 
consciousness in form.  We have a spectacular time now.  It is spectacular.  We‟re in 
the middle of huge changes.  We have extraordinary information.  We have practical 
tools. 
 
What we get to discover is that the moment that you give authority to the life, to the 
form, everything changes, everything.  We finally get to see what kind of a world 
we‟re in and what the world is for us.  It's the spirit, after all.  The spirit of humanity 
is so depressed.  It is angry and frustrated and bitter and disappointed.  This is 
humanity; and very serious, yes indeed, very, very serious.  Ah, the beauty of what 
it is to watch the movie.  I love watching my movie because it's entertaining and it's 
funny.  It‟s this and that, too, there‟s everything.  But, it's not personal.   
 
I realized right away that when my vehicle was making decisions that my mind has 
nothing to do with any of that.  I didn‟t know what the hell is going on.  Helpless and 
incompetent, I rather love it.  The humiliation for my Personality, my mind, the great 
humiliation, a good mind is totally useless, totally pointless.  It is only when my mind 
realized that, that my passenger could emerge.  The whole construct fell apart, it 
just fell apart.  It wasn‟t needed, it wasn‟t necessary, it brought nothing of value.  
What mind doesn‟t know is my mind just measures.  It doesn‟t have anything else to 
do.  I watch it measure.  And then it has lovely moments like that this where it gets 
to exercise outer authority, which I also just watch, because there isn‟t anything 
else.  It's not the “me,” whatever. 
 
That‟s the beauty of the 6.  Every being that carries the 6 carries the magic of the 
future, it carries the magic of what's possible for a human being, what‟s possible for 
any human being if they're fortunate enough in this life to come in contact with this 
knowledge and they get to experiment with it and see for themselves.  Ultimately we 
all of us gets to live the benefit of that.

The 6th Line Being Needs to Pay Attention Physically  
But it's one of those things to caution those beings that you meet, that you know, 
that come along on your fractal line, those 6s have to pay attention.  They have to 
pay attention particularly physically, which is why PHS is very good for them, to 
begin to align their vehicle to what is correct and to begin to give them a much 
healthier framework out of which to work.  A lot of the lingering pessimism of 6th line 
beings that they have from their Saturnian stage, a lot of that pessimism can 
disappear if they eat properly.  It really makes a difference when you can‟t clean out 
your body of all that old conditioning and you‟re constantly ignoring what nurtures 
what is good for.  So, it's something that is important to keep in mind. 
 
The Mystery of the 6th Line  
But I guess most of all when you‟re thinking about the 6th line, I think it‟s thinking 
about its mystery, because that is what it is for me.  It‟s something temporary.  It's 
temporary, after all.  I go back and look at that 5, 6-6-6 and I think all that 6-6-6 
stuff is going to go away.  The carbon form, the bio-form is going to disappear.  
We‟re riding the wave of an extraordinary illusion.  And it's there in the 6.  It‟s the 
mystery.  And it‟s very special.  It gives us a taste of completion, I guess, what it is 
to be able to fully take advantage of the good fortune we‟ve had in being in the 
forms we‟re in and what they're capable of.  It's a deep way of transforming the 
spirit that one has in relationship to life itself. 
 
But the 6, without question is its own kind of wonder.  Again, it just reminds us how 
important it is for children that they know, that they‟re looked after, that they‟re 
properly cared for.  It‟s going to make an enormous difference in the quantity and 
quality of true role models that we can have in this life.  Those that establish what is 
the most profound example of all, that one can stand alone in the world, that one 
can trust in oneself, and at the same time be there, be there in the life. 
 
So, we come to the end of our journey through the lines.  It was interesting for me 
to come back and take a look at them.  It's fun, actually, to see them in a different 
way.  It‟s so much different.  I think it‟s one of the things that happens in the 
knowledge.  I teach a lot of courses, I teach a lot of material and it‟s always 
synthesizing in one way or another.  And beauty of the mechanics of Human Design 
is that the very earliest mechanics I introduced at the very beginning, in the early 
90s, is all still the same.  It‟s the depth that we have now.  That‟s what‟s so 
beautiful.  The years and years and years of peeling the onion has so much beauty 
that we've reached a point now where we can talk about this knowledge as a science 
because there is such depth to it, so it fun to come back to basics.  Hopefully I‟ll get 
around to it again.

The next thing I‟m going to do at the general level is in September and that is The 
Complete Guide to the Human Design System, which I think is going to be a very 
exciting trip.  That‟s a 15 lecture live TV program that will start then.  But other than

the not-self which is part of my general lecture series that goes along with Nine-
